If you mean 'open' by left clicking on the icon in My Computer or Explorer then that is normal if you do not have disks inserted.

Perhaps you can clarify?

430211 2006-02-14 03:08:00 It can also mean that there is a a problem with a drive, its software driver, or the disk in it. :( Graham L (2)
430212 2006-02-14 03:13:00 hi Disk inserted ,and presssed left mouse, also disks checked on another PC and OK Thank you,but still will not flash up on my PC, sorry to be a pest. hazlettian (9802)
430213 2006-02-14 03:34:00 Strange that both devices are showing the same symptoms.

My first thoughts would be to go to Device Manager and uninstall the drivers for each drive (in XP), or if Win98, click on Remove.

Then go to Add New Hardware, and let the operating system redetect them, or just reboot, and see what happens.

430214 2006-02-14 06:36:00 I haven't seen this problem before. Try the following (it won't fix it, but maybe it'll be helpful to a helper)

Start... Run... Cmd
[if "cmd" doesn't work, try "command"]
[put a floppy in your drive]
A:
dir /b

[put a CD in your drive]
D:
[if "D:" doesn't work try other letters]

dir /b
exit

Tell us what *exactly* happened, such as lights flashing, disk sounds, messages.

430215 2006-02-15 04:39:00 Whe I last saw it (yesterday) with a floppy drive, (with a known bad disk) it gave a very long delay while the system tried to see the disk). Again, yesterday, a just written CD-RW in a USB drive couldn't be seen until I unplugged the drive and plugged it in again. (The CD drive on that laptop is stuffed, but Hardware Manager says it's working correctly. (Like most managers, it knows nothing). It gives that message when I try to access a disk.)

So I suspect the problem is in the drivers.

430216 2006-02-16 02:42:00 Hi to all,I forgot to mentioned I up dated spybot and this problem, problem showed up. A friend of mine called to see me,and he said that might have some thing to do with my problem,Does spybot affect the Registry files and ,and files that you use when you instal Spybot(sorry to be a botheration)Thanks again. Appreciate all your help . Hazlettian hazlettian (9802)
430217 2006-02-19 01:46:00 That shouldn't do anything to affect the drives. At the level of that error message it's just the drive and the OS talking to each other. The only way any programme can "see" a drive is through the OS. Graham L (2)
