430295 2006-02-15 00:19:00 I installed it manually as per link below .
If you check by going via control panel to "add or remove programmes" you will find it listed correctly under updates.

430296 2006-02-15 00:20:00 The link I posted is fine. I'm using SP2 as well, and it installed no prob at all.

I dont think the file is corrupt.

4 of the updates have been installed (exc the removal tool), and the Outlook 2003 email Junk email filter update.

I have installed it from your link.

Thanks

Trevor :)

430297 2006-02-15 00:21:00 Speedy,
I have SP2 installed.

Note to Trev,

Do I take it that you have the same problem and that you will post Microsoft's response if or when you get it?

Yes.

430298 2006-02-15 00:26:00 I have installed it from your link .

Thanks

Trevor :)

No worries :)

I usually download the updates manually, since there's 2 XP PC's here .

It saves me going to the Windowupdate site twice .

430299 2006-02-15 00:30:00 Hi all

I have SP1 and it did not install as mentioned earlier. As Speedy Gonzales said there appears to be confusion as to whether it is meant for those with SP1. Anyway, I have now successfully installed the update by going here (www.updatexp.com). By working through the steps I finally installed the update. Hope this helps others, and thanks for your comments.

430300 2006-02-15 00:41:00 Right, finally got it via manual download and install. It does show up under Add/Remove Programs, but not under the Windows Update history web-page. That's why I thought it hadn't installed properly before. Terry Porritt (14)

It wont show under Windowupdate's history, if u installed it manually .

It will only show, if you installed it thru the Windowsupdate site .

430302 2006-02-15 03:08:00 According to sources, about 80% of XP users with SP-2 (the only way it can be installed by the way) are getting a failed result . Without SP-2, it's SUPPOSED to be impossible . . as SP-2 is necessary for anyone using XP anyway .

If you use an alternate site to download the update, you won't see it in the history for the update via Micro$oft, but it will be running and performing as needed anyway .

The site that is recommended by my oldest son (Windows Certified Tech) is this:

. microsoft . com/technet/security/bulletin/MS06-007 . mspx" target="_blank">www . microsoft . com

But first, get the Micro$oft Baseline Security Adviser to see if you really need the update . . . as some units behind NAT firewalls don't actually need this protection anyway (there may be other reasons for failures, but this seems to be a biggie) . Being behind a NAT will cause this update to fail repeatedly .

Get the M$ Beta Security Adviser here:
. microsoft . com/technet/security/tools/mbsahome . mspx" target="_blank">www . microsoft . com

Well some people have had probs with installing SP2 . (I dont think they've actually tried to install SP2, they've read what other people have said, after they've installed SP2) .

And some (or most) people dont either realise that SP2 HATES spyware/adware/TV Media, which is also spyware .

Or if they have a Prescott CPU, that they need to fix this, before installing SP2 .

And most people wouldn't know if they've got spyware, unless they check their system/s thoroughly, before they install SP2 .

I think with this update, MS somehow screwed something up . Which is why it would fail, from the Windowsupdate site, but it would work / install, if you downloaded it manually, then installed it .

Dear Trevor,

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Online Assisted Support . My name is Rubesh and I will be assisting you with your case involving Windows Update . Please note that you will be requested to participate in a customer satisfaction survey based on this service; we would greatly appreciate your taking the time to complete the survey once you are satisfied that the support process is finished .

As I understand it, your issue is you are unable to download and install Security Update for Windows XP (KB913446) successfully as you are receiving an error message . If this is not correct, please let me know .

I would like you to download and install the update Security Update for Windows XP (KB913446) manually to see if it helps you resolve your issue . Kindly visit the following link to download and install the update .

Security Update for Windows XP (KB913446)
. microsoft . com/downloads/details . aspx?FamilyID=7bb21d74-c37b-472b-bb10-71d4680680a7&DisplayLang=en" target="_blank">www . microsoft . com

I have also put together some general troubleshooting steps for Windows Update problems which may resolve your issue if the problem still persists . Please try out the steps and let me know the results .

1 . Disable any Firewall, Antivirus, download accelerator software .
Firewalls and Antivirus programs are 3rd Party (non-Microsoft) Programs, and although they are mostly effective in protecting your computer from Viruses and Computer hackers, they do fail to take into consideration program installations .

The nature of these programs is that they scan everything on the computer, making sure to try and stop any virus-like activity .

When you visit Windows Update and download, and most importantly install any of the updates, the update installation is always battled by the Antivirus and Firewall until the Antivirus clears the program of being a virus .

In most cases, this is harmless and the Update installation goes through successfully .

Occasionally, the Installation gets corrupted, and a process during the install is stopped, or interfered with by the Antivirus product .

For this reason, we suggest that you disable or uninstall any Antivirus or Firewall software while trying to install updates from Windows Update .

2 . Verify the Language Settings
2 . 1 . Start Internet Explorer .
2 . 2 . Click "Tools", and then click "Internet Options" .
2 . 3 . Click the "General" tab, and then click "Languages" .
2 . 4 . In the "Language" list, make sure that the operating system language version is included . If the operating system language version is not on the list, click "Add", click the language in the "Language" list, click "OK", click "OK", and then click "OK" again .

3 . Reset Internet Zone Security
3 . 1 . Start Internet Explorer .
3 . 2 . Click "Tools", and then click "Internet Options" .
3 . 3 . Click the "Security" tab, and then in the" Select a Web content zone to specify its security settings" box, click "Internet" .
3 . 4 . Click "Default Level", and then click "Apply" to set this zone to Medium security .
3 . 5 . Click "OK" .

4 . Verify that the Date and Time Are Set Correctly
4 . 1 In the bottom right corner of your screen, doubleclick the time . This will open the Date and Time Properties window .
4 . 2 Please check that all details are correct including the year, the Time zone and that AM/PM is set correctly .
4 . 3 Click OK .

5 . Verify that You Have an Internet Connection
Try to log on to your Internet service provider (ISP) before you try to access the Windows Update site . With some ISPs you must log on before you open a browser session . When you log on to an ISP, TCP/IP is loaded and provides connectivity to the Internet . To connecting to the Windows Update site, you must have an existing TCP/IP session .

6 . Verify That Port 443-https Is Open
Windows Update uses the Secure HTTP port to connect to your computer . To test whether port 443 is open on your computer, follow these steps:

6 . 1 . Start Internet Explorer .
6 . 2 . In the "Address" bar, type "https://s . microsoft . com:443" (without the quotation marks), and then press ENTER .

If you cannot connect to Microsoft . com, or you receive an error message, the port may be blocked .

If the issue still persists, before troubleshooting this issue further I will need to obtain some necessary information . Please note that the more information I obtain relating to your issue, the more able I will be to provide you with suitable troubleshooting steps . Please answer the following questions:

* What version of Windows XP Service Pack are you using?

To locate the version of Windows you are using please follow the below steps:
a . Right-click on "My Computer" .
b . Left-click on the option labelled "Properties" . The System Properties Dialog Box will appear .
c . On the right side of the window that appears under the heading labelled "System" you will see your version of Windows . Please make sure you provide all information that appears under the System heading and above the "Registered To" heading .

* Is your computer a brand name computer such as an IBM, Compaq, HP, Dell etc? If yes, what is the brand name and model (if possible)?

* Are you receiving any error messages? If so could you please provide these word-for-word and include the last action(s) taken just prior to the error appearing . Please state the Error number that you are receiving such as 0x80072EFD and etc .

* Has Windows Update ever functioned correctly? If so, how long has the problem been occurring?

* Do you have any Anti-virus, Anti-Spyware or Firewall software installed? If so, what is this called? Is it enabled or disabled?

* Have you made any recent hardware or software changes? This includes downloading software or drivers from the internet .

* Does the problem occur when you attempt to connect to the Windows Update site, download or install Windows Updates?

Once I have this information, I will be able to offer further assistance . I look forward to your response .

Kind regards,
Rubesh Vehnu
