1397339 2015-03-26 01:20:00 Hi All...I have stuffed up again.
Asus laptop. W8.1. Classic Shell.

Yesterday I did a system restore which was successful. Whilst I was in there I saw that I could revert to W8.1 standard by removing Classic Shell. So I did. Now I get a black screen after switching on & entering the password.
Eventually the screen goes black & nothing happens.

Using a 16GB flashdrive we made a recovery USB off Maryann ASUS & plugged this into mine. Apart from a few flash light flickers nothing.

Yes I am an idiot. Now what do I do Please. PJ

One customer would work on his car at the weekend, then bring it in on Monday to get fixed.

1397341 2015-03-26 05:00:00 High chance the problem is those third party programs trying to mimic The old start menu - More trouble than they are worth. Any updates MS put out generally are NOT going to consider third party programs like that..

After you log on, try this-- press Ctrl+ Alt+Del, see if the task manager opens, if it does, look down the bottom left hand corner, make sure all tasks are showing, if it says Show Details, click it , scroll Through and see if there are any entries called explorer.exe running, if there is more than one, click each one, End process. When all closed, up top click on File - Run New task, type in explorer.exe Press Enter, or Click OK and see if the desktop reappears.

The Black Screen is sometimes caused by damaged Graphic or some other drivers. AMD graphics seem more prone to causing problems than Intel.

1397342 2015-03-26 05:24:00 Edit to above, look for Windows Explorer if explorer.exe is not showing.

If it still goes to a black screen on reboot you may have to remove the current graphic drivers. More on that if required.

1397343 2015-03-26 07:24:00 Boot into safe mode and revert back or...

Got a windows 8.1 disc? Since a system restore worked, could boot from the disc and restore it again or...

Seems graphic related, maybe if possible increase the shared RAM in the BIOS, might just be a bit low to handle standard. On second thought is classic some third party shell for windows? Sorry classic and standard were quite common terms for windows GUI.

Cheers,

KK

KK Yeah, its a third party program that some people install to mimic the old style windows start menu, instead of learning how to actually use W8 -8.1. www.classicshell.net

I've taught lots of people on W8.1 start menu, and so far everyone I've taught cant really see the problems. Did another today, retired couple was going from XP to W8.1, never used 8.1 till today, after roughly 15 - 20 minutes they were zipping around all over the place, setting things up how they wanted it, absolutely loving it and making comments like this is great. :) THEN they found the all the free games in Windows Store :D

Just a footnote, people who hate the 8.1 tiles are going to dislike W10 even more ;) its currently a combination of W7 & W8.1 menus

1397345 2015-03-26 09:28:00 Upon arriving at the Black Screen try pressing on Keyboard: Windows Key + D

That should bring you back to Standard Desktop.

Yes in case I need it get 8.1. The other thing is that there are a lot of updates to d/l & install. One of them is going to be the one or tw. to allow 8.1 to install. PJ
