1385752 2014-10-07 03:51:00 About 6 six years ago, we had to replace our (amazing, but discontinued) Dishlex dishwasher, which was around 10 years old. Unfortunately, due to financial considerations at the time, we could not afford to buy at the top of the range as I usually prefer.

So we settled for an Elba - around $800 IIRC. It blew up at just over 3 years old, but we repaired it (a new ECB - yes, after only three years!) for around $300 (I think). At the time I swore that when it finally gave up the ghost, I would buy almost any brand OTHER than F&P (now Haier).

It just made a big bang today and there was a burning smell, so I suspect it's time to start looking at replacement machines.

I was reasonably impressed, when it blew up the last time, with the Miele and Bosch machines.

I do have a Consumer subscription, so will look there too, but thought I might try to get some additional input from you lot...

Thanks in advance.

1385753 2014-10-07 03:55:00 We always used a Westinghouse until we went into a rental and was always pleased with that.

Moving to new house soon and are installing the F&P double dish drawer model.

Dishwasher

Overall, 86% of dishwashers had never needed repair.

* Above average: Asko, Bosch, Miele
* Average: Haier, LG, Simpson, Westinghouse
* Below average: Fisher & Paykel DishDrawer, Fisher & Paykel Dishwasher

The most reliable brands were Bosch (93 percent), Miele and Asko (both 91 percent).

Fisher & Paykel was the least reliable dishwasher brand in our survey.
“Programme failure” was the most common problem. The Fisher & Paykel DishDrawer had the most problems in this

Shoppers will find that while stainless steel and other top-end products retain the Fisher and Paykel badge, other products will be branded as Elba by Fisher and Paykel.

1385755 2014-10-07 04:30:00 I'm on my 2nd dishwasher since 1999. both times I just bought a basic model F&P and have no complaints. This one is about 2-3 years old so the first one did well, it was actually still working when I replaced it but was developing some issues and I figured at that age repairing it was not worthwhile. dugimodo (138)

1385757 2014-10-07 05:03:00 We've had about 6 in the last 30 years. I've learned:

- they all have their annoyances and problems (we only buy the cheaper ones)

- the more "silent" they are the worse job they do at cleaning

- stainless steel is a waste of money and shows smudges

- we always get the "timer" model BUT HAVE NEVER USED THE TIMER A countdown timer is useful though (minutes to go)

- measure the diameter of your (biggest) plates to make sure they fit in the bottom basket

- we've always bought adjustable height of the top basket BUT HAVE ALWAYS LEFT IT IN THE HIGHEST POSITION so that the bottom basket has the maximum height. Wine glasses go in the top. We use "reduced-stem stemware" (being a little more elegant than stemless stemware!)

Our current one is an F & P Elba. It works OK but doesn't do a good job unless you stack it accurately AND it is best if you soak dirty dishes before putting them in.

One thing I like about it is that it resumes at the right point if you accidentally kill the power or pause it to add something.

I think you get used to anything, like cars. You have to suffer annoyances with anything. I would go for "cheaper" but not the cheapest, and accept that it might last only 3 years

1385758 2014-10-07 05:07:00 I too have had 2 F & P dish washers over the last 25 years. Just replaced the door seal on our current one after14 years. Left our first one in previous house 11 years old, never having needed repairs.
