1386520 2014-10-21 03:56:00 The British were losing, just like the previous war they declared. Their bacon was saved by others which, in accordance with tradition, they declared as their victory.
They did provide some of their their own boot polish though.
The Hurricane was not as nimble as the spitfire, but it was far more reliable, downed more enemy aircraft, and killed less of it's pilots. However, the spitfire had better publicity, which worked the same way it does for Apple.

Sounds like we might have a foreign type person here, off to Coventry with him, one assumes it's a him.

1386521 2014-10-21 05:00:00 From what I worked out the Hurricane shot down more planes because it was a very stable gun platform. Generally the Hurricane went for the bombers while the Spitfires attacked the fighters. There are advantages and disadvantages of these fighters including the German ones. Different marks were almost different planes. One major disadvantage of the Englander fighters was they cut on a bunt while a German plane with fuel injection did not. So anytime a ME109 wanted to escape all it had to do was push the stick forward. For the Englander plane they had to half roll then dive.
Any way we won, we always win. It was a beautiful thing watching a plane fly for the first time after 75 years. I imagine the pilot would be looking for suitable paddocks when flying around . Be best to die than survive a crash with the BF109 written off.

Rather it was a Miss Shilling, not Tilly. I worked with a bloke who had been at RR and knew Miss Shilling.

It was a modification to the carburetor that prevented the petrol slurping away from the jets when the plane was put into a dive.

i think it was the 109 that something like 50% of them crashed on take off or landing. they have narrow wheels which made them unstable on rough airfields.
other than that the german planes where well ahead of anything the brits had. the mk1 hurricane had a fixed wooden propeller !
the hurricane was the work horse. did the bulk of the battle of Britain and served in multiple roles once they modernized it a bit.

the hurricane was the work horse. The hurricane was a modified biplane. It was crap compared to what the krauts had. It was the spitfire mostly and its pilots which saved Britain. Of course we all know that the spit only really came into its own from the mark 11 onwards, especially Mk 13.

because there were more of them than spits. (During the Battle of Britain)
Simple math.
A stable gun platform wont help if you cant get gunsights on a moving/weaving target
They were quicker/cheaper/easier to build, that was really important at a time when Britain had b8gger all spits .
They were also alot more likely to seriously burn the pilot when shot (gas tank position etc)

It was the Hurricane that won the battle of Britain, not the spit.....
Actually, it was the germans poor decisions that allowed Britain to 'win' . If they had kept attacking airfields & radar stations, Britain would have lost (the air battle)
Instead the Germans moved on to bombing cities, then gave up to concentrate on invading Russia instead.

Trying to spread disinformation ?? :)

The Mk X1 was a PR aircraft, didn't have any guns, and AFAIK there wasn't a Mk XIII, there was an 'interim' MkXII which was the modified Mk VIII converted to the Griffon engine, and then the Mk XIV, also with RR Griffon engine.
