| 1386080 | 2014-10-12 07:23:00 | Id go with Massey simply because Ive never found a graduate of Victoria University that was use or ornament. :D | B.M. (505) | ||

They do charge more but that would be because it is a course designed specifically for people who want to design and build games. lets just say you get what you pay for. I did my web design course at MDS and got a lot of value from it. While I was there I saw the gamers as their course started half way through my course so I got to see a lot of what they were doing. There was a lot of game theory and high level mathematics involved. |

| 1386082 | 2014-10-12 08:50:00 | Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions. icow: Thanks that was really helpful in assisting me towards making a decision, didn't realise that they recorded lectures which will be really useful! Webdevguy: I'm sorry, but the thought of living in Auckland 24/7 would make me implode. Palmy's so nice and small :D. I'm also finding myself nodding in agreement to what Cato said about a university being a university. sahilcc7: Yeah I already have a laptop + a chromebook (which I dearly love), so building a desktop would also be a new hobby for me. Probably unnecessary, but I still want to do it :D Cato: I actually agree with you, and the skills you learn (at least at a basic level) must all be the same, and by studying software engineering more generally it probably leaves my path more open should I decide to pursue another career in software development. At this stage, I'm favouring Massey University, for geographical and financial convenience. Has anyone done the course at Vic? How did you find it there if so? Thanks! |

| 1386084 | 2014-10-12 18:32:00 | Firstly, is RAM just RAM no matter the brand? I'm seeing really expensive 'gaming' RAM and some cheaper RAM both DDR3 1600, so what's the difference? Also, how do I compare motherboards? I've found my ideal CPU, the AMD FX-6300, and for GPU I'm thinking AMD R9 270 (or 280 if I can find it cheap) - does the GPU brand matter? Yes. Expensive gaming RAM has better overclocking potential, doesn't really matter, get good brand normal RAM. Motherboards, it needs to take the CPU you have chosen, have a PCI-E slot, plenty of RAM slots - so probably ATX rather than mATX. Asus or Gigabyte. GPU - yes it does matter. ASUS or Gigabyte, 3 year warranty. |

| 1386086 | 2014-10-12 19:09:00 | I agree with Plod. Is the thought of going to Vic an irrational "want to get away from Mum syndrome" or a genuine belief that Vic would be best? Personally I think that if you have misgivings about moving to Auckland, Wellington will prove to be just as bad. If Massey can offer the course you want, it's better the devil you know and I would stay in Palmy! |

No problem, I also know someone doing that game design course in Auckland. Can inquire about what that entails if you'd like? |
