1385558 2014-10-03 06:46:00 Ok, so my little girls are discovering the internet, little gaming sites and kids sites etc, I let them use my old xp machine to muck around online on.
Got me thinking, what settings and stuff should I be using for them? I have an admin account for myself and have made them a limited account.
Cheers

1385560 2014-10-03 06:51:00 If it was Vista or newer then you would have parental controls to use gary67 (56)
1385561 2014-10-03 07:01:00 If you want control / Protection- you can try Open DNS as explained protect-your-kids-online-using-open-dns-2/ (www.howtogeek.com)

Also a good and helpful talk can go a long way.

Dont come on as the heavy, but explain the dangers, what not to do and what not to give out - personal details for example. Watch out for places like Facebook, Twitter - while those sorts can be safe and fun there's a lot of dangers as well.

1385562 2014-10-03 07:04:00 9 year old and a 6 six year old. Just using the xp machine as it's not used by anyone else really. Wouldnt be a drama if it got wasted. The other newer machines I wont let them touch as it has too much work and my band stuff on them. rob_on_guitar (4196)
1385563 2014-10-03 07:11:00 Youtube is a popular I think for young girls, my girl and my nieces frequently watch it. The tend to like singing/makeup/hair style tutorials. So beware, they may be wanting their own make up/hair styling products, or attempt to make their own. Seriously though my felt markers, candles, little jars, and liquid glue vanished and got used a bit due to those vids. kahawai chaser (3545)

The other newer machines I wont let them touch as it has too much work and my band stuff on them. Its not so much the hardware, its more to do with online safety. Theres a lot of weird buggers and dangers on the internet that pray on young girls. Awareness and knowledge is the best safety tool they can have. wainuitech (129)
1385565 2014-10-03 08:12:00 There is only one answer to this.
You are the parent and the best thing to use is your own judgement.

They need to be supervised and while you are doing that educate them to the dangers and benefits of the net.

Good advice, I think.

1385567 2014-10-03 12:24:00 Ive done the speech part, they pretty good kids, they only get a hour to play, mainly dress up games on sites like friv and bigfuntown. I made the fatal mistake of falling asleep on the couch while they watched a nail polish tutorial.... woke up with colourful feet! rob_on_guitar (4196)
