| 1478725 | 2021-07-14 06:22:00 | My knowledgeable daughter has told me that I need to do a restart on my PC occasionally to install the updates. I turn my PC off each night and turn it on again the next morning. Will that suffice? I notice a small icon down the bottom right of the screen, every so often, that says that I need to restart to install updates. So I do. But what is the difference between shutting it down each night and doing a restart during the day? And does it matter?:confused: |

| 1478727 | 2021-07-14 07:16:00 | Short answer no it doesn't matter, when the PC is on and Windows Update is configured to download and install available updates, it will do so whether it be a cold start or a warm reboot. The trigger to install the updates will be the OS booting up. | chiefnz (545) | ||

| 1478729 | 2021-07-15 06:30:00 | When updates are waiting the shutdown options have a couple extras, "update and restart" and "update and shutdown" It doesn't matter which you choose. If you do the shutdown option it will probably not finish until the next boot up which will take a little longer. Windows will also tell you it needs to restart at some point as piroska mentioned if you haven't done one of the power options as above and an update is waiting. |
