1478188 2021-06-24 23:20:00 I do not have MS Office when there are free alternatives out there that are every bit as good. But, I have been running Outlook for a few years now and just lately a small elongated window has appeared down the left side of the Outlook window with the MS Office apps - Word, Excel, Power Point and One Note. When I click on the Word app, for example, it opens the Word programme. The same with the other apps.

I did not ask for the programme and - if anyone asks - I'm definitely not paying for it, so how is that it is there for me to use? Not that I'm complaining, I just wonder where it came from and why I have not been asked to pay for it.:illogical

1478189 2021-06-24 23:54:00 Is that the online (Browser) version of Outlook ? If so, thats normal. Its the free Online version

If you dont have MS Office installed, then you wont have Outlook INSTALLED either . Outlook is part of MS Office .

Thank you for that, 1101.

It is the online Outlook that I am using, as far as I am aware. But I did not think I had Outlook installed - I thought that I accessed that online.

So it looks as though I have MS Word even though I am not paying for anything - and as I understand, it's not cheap.

Is that any different from the bought version? I've had a look and it certainly seems the same.

Below is a quick pic of the Home tab - Top is online, bottom is Installed 365 (word) All the tabs along the top change (on both) but the online is a cutdown version with quite a bit missing compared to the Purchased.

BUT for general writing letters and some minor formatting the online does the same.

1478195 2021-07-04 04:57:00 Also by using online office, I'm sure Microsoft will data-mine all your documents for targeted advertising and who-knows-what-else too!

Why else is it free?

Because MS doesnt want Google's equivalent to gain a bigger market share .
As a way to entice people into using & then buying MS Office or 365 . Get them using the free version & they might be willing to buy the product .
Because MS want to stay the No1 'Office' product & will do whatever needed to achieve that .
