| 431754 | 2006-02-17 21:06:00 | Hi, For six years I have happily used Norton's antivirus, last year I even renewed it online--ie Notons 2004.Yes ! yes! I know there are many ycynics who dislike Symantec-but---- :annoyed: Of late the settings in "scheduled tasks" change back to every 4 hours and the start time varies from 2 am to late pm. I rang Norton's from whence previously had had very helpfull advice, but this time the gentleman ( who obviously does not have english as his first language) said to correct this I would have to pay $42 and get the answer from their technician- "WE ARE NOT AMUSED" as I had my sub-paid and have even been registered with them. I got an e mail asking for my comments after this contact- and boy! were they told in good measure! Is there a setting within my computer that will do the job? I am using XP >500MHz,18.3 Gb h/d :help: effie c |

| 431755 | 2006-02-18 01:51:00 | There was a discussion about this on this forum last year when I had the same problem. I tried repeatedly to re-set the scheduled task but it would always revert to a 4 hour schedule. I now just go into Live update manually twice a week. The consensus seemed to be that the previous frequent updates were changed after broadband became readily accessible, even if you do not have broadband. Hope this makes sense - Finn |

| 431756 | 2006-02-18 06:29:00 | Hi Finn, Thank goodness someone does read my postings. What exasperates me is the demand for more money to correct what I assume to be Norton's fault and I bloody well will not pay more after my sub was accepted. They did suggest that as I had only renewed v2004 it was old hat so to speak and if I had got 2005 it would not have happened- yeah right ! I probably will install the latest on expiry of the current sub - but I doubt that will correct it for all that. I do not see why broadband should make any difference- but like you I will have to bite the bullet and as you do go in twice a week. Thank you again effie c |

"You can have LiveUpdate check for protection updates automatically, on a set schedule, by enabling Automatic LiveUpdate. You must continue to run LiveUpdate manually to receive product updates. Automatic LiveUpdate checks for an Internet connection every five minutes until a connection is found, and then every four hours." Its apparently not a setting, its a hard coded feature. |

At least when you update manually, you update for programs as well, whereas liveupdate only does the virus definitions. When you install a new version, you need to remove the previous antivirus via add/remove programs. I had no problem removing Systemworks 2002 before installing NIS 2006. Cheers, Finn. |

| 431759 | 2006-02-18 20:10:00 | Hi, I was going to let the matter rest- and "get a life" so to speak-but-- Godfather you said Norton's checked for trouble for the first 5 mins then every 4 hours. Would that mean I am fretting for nowt?---that the 5 minute one was done behind the scenes, then in comes the 4 hour one? Actuallyy I rarely am on air for 4 hours at a stretch - so that means it starts over? I doubt that as after a week of 'no pop up' telling me my virus definition was up to date,I get a warning "your antivirus has not been updated for sic 10 days - it is essential to do it now" On doing that I get sometimes 5 updates - thus a manual update has to be done effie c |

| 431760 | 2006-02-19 06:38:00 | Hi Effie, Just confirming that my new Norton antivirus 2006 only checks for virus definitions every 4 hours at the times listed in scheduled tasks. It does not appear to check in the first 5 minutes as Google says. You can change the time in scheduled tasks but it re-sets it to check again 4 hours after you do a live update. Finn. |
