2006-02-17 20:54:00 | Hey guys! Have now got broadband, mums still not convinced, but shes complaining about the sudden obvious drop of speed on dialup. I have to admit its soooo damn slow compared to before (and of course compared to Broadband) is the filters causing a slowdown? Or am I meant to tweak some settings? I was on hold for 45 mins with xtra this morning and i gave up coz its too long waiting! Shes using winxp home with dialup :) Can anyone help or is this something that happens when you hook up broadband?

2006-02-17 21:03:00 | Hi Chris Have you got the dialup modem plugged into a filter as well? It needs to be. You haven't added any extra extension cords or anything? Does it still appear slow after logging on and off a few times? Xtra don't appear to have a speed test (or it is well hidden), so go here (www.ihug.co.nz) and click on the download speed test for dialup (128K) and see what your mum's dialup speed is like.

2006-02-17 21:15:00 | all phone stokets are in filters, apart from ones we dont use. the only change at the socket where mums computer is, is the addition of filters, nothing else. it was slow last night, i said maybe see what happens this morning, and its way way slow. will go run that test now and see what happens :)

Can't help with drop in dialup speed sorry. The way to convince your Mum about Broadband would be to find a way to share it with her... |

2006-02-18 04:46:00 | If all she uses it for is e-mail etc then theres no need to get faster speeds. I might encourage you to get her interested in something that needs a faster connection, like find a website where people upload their paintings they have done with photoshop/paintshop etc. If she likes it, but gets annoyed with the speed, then encourage her to get broadband then. on the topic of broad band...telecom is supposed to replace the 2000/128 connection with a 3500/512 one in about april this year, YAY!!!! (same price too)

2006-02-18 11:54:00 | Ah just checked it again Maccrazy, thanks. I can't stand 128kbps upload...my pings are only 1/2 of 56k (58 average to NZ servers) so i think i'll get the 512k upload one | Faded_Mantis (79) | |
