431339 2006-02-17 01:08:00 Hi,
Can somebody tell me if I could possibly install a faster CPU .
Finance has been a problem for years, but then, two, school boys dragged the rivers etc and got me going very very well indeed.
At the moment I am using a 500MHz,Cpu and using XP very succesfully especially when I had the ram upgraded to 512 mb, also thanks to a member of F1.
These boys-now men, stated that I had reached the limit on my present motherboard, and I must respect that.
But in the light of progress, would there be, now, anything usuable- say up round 900 MHz, or even better that will do the job.
It would take a Lotto win to be able to buy the latest machine otherwise

On reading my hardware list, among all else,I see :-
SIS 530/600>
and so on down to
>
Maxtor 51536U3
SIS PC IDE controller
AMD-K6 (tm) processor

I hope I have included the motherboard description but if you need more tell me

431340 2006-02-17 01:10:00 Ooh a K6 processor.
Your better off getting a new motherboard and CPU. AMD K6's went up to about 500mhz and stopped there I think.
Go and get yourself a Lottery ticket! ;)

431342 2006-02-17 02:14:00 I'd imagine you could buy a better PC (excluding monitor etc) on trade me for the cost of that lottery ticket....LOL

Sorry, possibly a bit cruel, but not far from the truth. You could use the existing for parts, ie: RAM, HDD, Modem!!

good luck

431343 2006-02-17 02:23:00 hm.......or you could 'gut' it and put in a gruntier powersupply/motherboard/cpu/ram......if you want a budget system, say a sempron 2800/all'n'one mobo/256mb ddr/cheapish psu.......probably cost say...
$350...

431344 2006-02-17 02:30:00 Hi Solmeister,
Don't think I have believe me- my beloved wife of over 50 years calls me a fruitcake as it is ;)
I even have an AV rating and a credit a/c there- how is that for wealth???
Cracks aside I have looked and looked, and to be quite candid the cost of even a computer- tower --no modem or anything - brings the cost so high that one of Dell $900 is nearly in the picture :badpc:
At one time recently I even thought I had a chance of a laptop- since, not available after all.

Oh well no sense in whining - I will just keep my eyes open
Thanks though :o

Effie!, 20 hours to go on that pc, 1 would be surprised if it gets to $100
reserve already met, any newer cpu that you would concievable place in your existing computer would cost close to this, plus you have spare parts!

Check the link!

431346 2006-02-17 23:03:00 Hi Solemeister,
The only tower worth a look showed up in trade me at what appears to read as $200 ( I can use monitor speakers etc from this one- but on literally talking to him by phone late last night- I stood to get egg on my face as the $200 was a long way to what appears to be $1600- ah well!! it cost him a toll call for his trouble
I think I would have to go for DDR ram -(and 500mb at that) and then the Cpu would have to be upwards of 1.6 GHz- none is available
Again, thanks and I wil keep looking- $300 would stop any chance of divorce proceedings ---I think  :annoyed:
Can you comment on my post re retaining settings this a m please- no repy as yet
