| 431429 | 2006-02-17 00:20:00 | i have 2x 40gb IDE hdds and i want to be able to use them as one logical 80gb harddrive, there has been confusion upon whether or not this is possible using Windows XP/server 2003. can someone tell me how 2 do it, the thing is one drive has windows on it (obviously) and the other is formatted and partitioned. | aidanmaz (7180) | ||

To set up the software raid you will need to go to Disk Management. (right-click My Computer - Manage - Disk Management) You should see your to 40GB HDD's listed in there, one with Windows installed and the other with nothing, not even a partition. You will need to right-click on each drive and convert to a Dynamic Disk. You will need to restart the machine to complete this. Then go back into Disk Management and right-click on the spare 40GB HDD and select create spanned volume. I think that's how you do it, haven't done it for a while! |

| 431433 | 2006-02-17 01:17:00 | So does the motherboard support RAID or not? I think, once u change it to dynamic, its not that easy to undo it. Altho, if you're trying to do RAID 0, I wouldnt bother. One hdd fails, so does the other. And then you're back to square 1. |
