431429 2006-02-17 00:20:00 i have 2x 40gb IDE hdds and i want to be able to use them as one logical 80gb harddrive, there has been confusion upon whether or not this is possible using Windows XP/server 2003. can someone tell me how 2 do it, the thing is one drive has windows on it (obviously) and the other is formatted and partitioned. aidanmaz (7180)

And I take it, the motherboard / BIOS supports IDE RAID?

431431 2006-02-17 00:43:00 It can be done in Windows XP / Server 2003 by software but a hardware raid solution is recommended.
To set up the software raid you will need to go to Disk Management. (right-click My Computer - Manage - Disk Management)
You should see your to 40GB HDD's listed in there, one with Windows installed and the other with nothing, not even a partition.
You will need to right-click on each drive and convert to a Dynamic Disk.
You will need to restart the machine to complete this.
Then go back into Disk Management and right-click on the spare 40GB HDD and select create spanned volume.
I think that's how you do it, haven't done it for a while!

431432 2006-02-17 01:12:00 both hdd are the same make and model identical, i do the spanned thing yet i still get 2 disks c and e, is this right?
can i partition the drive (back in basic) and mount the partition on c?

431433 2006-02-17 01:17:00 So does the motherboard support RAID or not?

I think, once u change it to dynamic, its not that easy to undo it.

Altho, if you're trying to do RAID 0, I wouldnt bother. One hdd fails, so does the other. And then you're back to square 1.

Did you start with nothing at all on the 2nd HDD? Not even a partition?

431435 2006-02-17 05:27:00 If you just want to use the 2 drives as one logical drive it might be a better idea to use JBOB as opposed to RAID0. That way if one drive fails, the data is recoverable from the first drive, doesnt offer the performance advantages though. Pete O'Neil (6584)
