431350 2006-02-17 01:00:00 most of the time it's basically impossible to transfer an 'installed' program to another harddrive you cant just copy it cause it's usually got registry listings etc that need to be also put in......and you may find as well snce its a pretty old program it simply wont run on xp....... drcspy (146)
431351 2006-02-22 10:19:00 Doesnt this thread apply me. cant i use liveCD.

431352 2006-02-22 11:06:00 You could run it off an emulator/virtualisation setup on the the newer PC. Probably, either of the old HDD or as a virtual drive image. Murray P (44)
431353 2006-02-22 17:38:00 It would pay to consult your friend who wrote the programmes about how they can best be transferred.

I’ve just copied/pasted many old MSDOS based programmes to WinME without any problems.

However, as has already been pointed out this doesn’t always work with XP.

So your saying If i copy the win95 program in XP on another PC it might not work . where if i copied it onto a Win95/98 setup on another pc it would work?>

I have not yet seen this program but it is like the one used @ supermarkets on the checkouts or @ cinemas . they start as soon as the pc starts, its one of those .
what are these perticular programs called BTW .

431355 2006-02-22 23:25:00 You might be getting into license trouble with your developer friends .

At the very least, they might be upset if you have a support problem, and they weren't told beforehand you're running it on different hardware .

If you're looking just to back up the hard disk, I'd suggest TrueImage or Symantec Ghost .

431356 2006-02-23 02:46:00 Could it be a "TSR" . . . "Terminate and Stay Resident" programme? These are usually . COM files rather than . EXE but either can be just copied . The only "installation" needed would be a line in AUTOIEXEC . BAT to start the programme . There might be data or configuration files, but these would usually be in the same directory as the executable .

Of course, I don't like your chances of running a TSR in Windows XP . :D
