| 431151 | 2006-02-16 08:27:00 | Hi I'm looking on TradeMe for another computer for the kids. There are alot of cheap Pentium 3 and AMD Durons about. I just bought a $200 Duron 1000 for one of them and it seems fine. How does some of the other processors compare for power and speed at around the same GHz. eg Celeron, P2 and 3 and early Athlons. Mainly wondering about the P3 which seems common. The kids play Sims etc and use Works etc. They are very happy with the Duron speed. This is the sort of thing at Buynow $200: PC P3-1GHz, 256MB, 20GB, CD-ROM +17" CRT Thanks, asdex |

| 431152 | 2006-02-16 08:34:00 | You wont get a P2 at the speed point, they maxed out at 500mhz irc, anyhow...the P3 was king at that clockspeed, the celeron was terrible. Athlon's and Durons of that era were pretty good,some of the motherboards were dodgy though. I would take the P3 if given the choice. |

| 431153 | 2006-02-16 08:39:00 | I'd be careful with some of the Motherboards from the Y2k - 2K1 era. I've just scrounged up a Socket 370 motherboard for free, unfortuntely it needed some TLC in the way of replacing the old capacitors which were on the verge of leaking electrolytic material all over the motherboard. Luckily $10 worth of capacitors and a $17 case later its all working fine |

| 431154 | 2006-02-16 09:39:00 | Yeah you want to be careful as they are in the vintage where 1) the power supply will die 2) the monitor will start to die 3) the hard drive will die and yep the motherboard caps issue (just saw an althlon 2000 today with it) It will eat into the bargin somewhat. Memory upgrades can be a pain so find one already with a fair chunk, maybe 512 MB over processor speed. |
