432379 2006-02-20 05:42:00 My wife is studying in another town and I would like to know the best way to take control of her laptop so I can help her with Excel and Word formatting etc. Is is best to dial direct into her pc or use the internet. What software is required?? ColinP (9837)
432380 2006-02-20 06:12:00 Windows XP Professional has the remote desktop program installed by default.
If your wife has that on her computer use the help wizard to set it up for you.

Another tool to use is VNC. Its more or less the same thing.

Microsofts Remote Desktop Help (www.microsoft.com)

I havent got a turotial for VNC but it should be pretty easy to use. Both computers need VNC installed to work.

432381 2006-02-20 06:16:00 The problem is that although these will let you take control of the computer, Windows XP allows only one "user". When you get control, your wife will be logged out. :( It's not exactly interactive. But you may be able to work out a way to work.

(Use the Internet to connect ... toll calls cost.)

432382 2006-02-20 19:35:00 I would recommend UltraVNC as you can set it to not lock the remote computer. This way your wife will still be able to see what you are doing on the screen.
I've found it works better than Remote Desktop on slower connections & also has the option of doing File Transfers.
You can download it here (http://www.ultravnc.com/).
You need to install the server onto the machine you want to take control of and at least the viewer onto your own machine.

Actually you can use remote assistance that comes with xp . That way your wife can see what you are doing and you can both control the computer at the same time . Just look it up in the help that comes with windows . You can send remote assistance invitations via messenger as well .

432384 2006-02-20 21:30:00 Remote Assistance with XP works well, I like Symantec pcAnywhere. Hasn't given me any problems yet. TiJay (6055)
432385 2006-02-20 23:50:00 Does Remote Assistance come with XP Home? Most laptop advertisments I've seen say "we recommend XP Professional" and the specifications show that they install XP Home. :D Graham L (2)
432386 2006-02-21 00:02:00 I think Home and Pro have Remote assistance .

However, only Pro has Remote desktop .

And this is the client remote desktop s/w from MS For other versions of Windows ( . microsoft . com/windowsxp/downloads/tools/rdclientdl . mspx" target="_blank">www . microsoft . com) you can use .
