432279 2006-02-19 20:49:00 after having problem with slow network for a long time
i've noticed sometimes..well.. it does work and sometimes it doesn't
when it's slow..it's around 60ish kb/s and when fast it can go up to 4600kb/s
and now i've finally figur out how to make it fast
and the solution was to put the computer to stand by then wake it up again
then network works at full speed

i need to transfer files between my two machines one running xp sp2 and the other kubuntu
both nic are set manually on full duplex at 100

now i've finally figured out that the problem is my xp comp
so don't have to keep trying different samba configs..
is there something that happens during stand by that can speed things up that i can do myself without making it stand by? so i can get full speed.. close to full speed network everytime

432280 2006-02-19 23:00:00 If thats an on-board NIC, it maybe going to sleep! Check Power options! SolMiester (139)
432281 2006-02-20 04:03:00 under my NIC properties's power management i tried unticking "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"
this didn't help and also stops the stand by trick to work

this problem of slow transfer speed happens right after a reboot too
and after going into stand by once, the speed goes up untill the next reboot

432282 2006-02-20 04:17:00 I take it that you've got it set up as a "Microsoft Network".

If going to standby and back fixes it, I'm surprised that booting doesn't work the same. Does seinding a ping to the Windows box improve matters?

There must be something odd going on. It might pay to run tcpdump in a terminal window, or another session, on the Ubuntu box. That might give a hint. Have a look at the samba log file, and /var/log/messages. (use the "tail" command to look at the logs just after starting a transfer.)

432283 2006-02-20 05:00:00 disable the webclient service on ye XP box.

try this (www.petri.co.il)

try a different network driver (i.e. if on-board seek out the actual manufacturer of the NIC, rather than the motherboard supplied ones).

might just be a poor switch (my ADSL router/switch seems to be poorer in performance than a proper 100 MBit switch, for example).

432284 2006-02-20 22:38:00 manage to get another 100mbits network card, Realtek 8139
that works fine with window's driver and realtek's driver
and goes into full speed after reboot without going into stand by and back

Nvidia nForce Networking Controller is what i have onboard
already using driver from nvidia so not sure if there is other drivers to try
it seems that the onboard nic can't initiate properly everytime i reboot or something
and so when i stand by it gets turned off as its power saving function says
then when i turn my computer back on from standby i see network disconnected for a few seconds and once it reconnects it goes at full speed

anyway.. might have to use this realtek card for a while...
