432226 2006-02-19 16:51:00 Hello members
A few months ago I bought and installed this HDD:Seagate Barracuda 7.200, 200 GB IDE Hard Drive.
Till a few weeks ago it all seemed to work ok and then I started noticing small changes or small things not working exactly.
I then got Easy Recovery Pro to run the partition test and this is what the result is:
Test Results:
Partition test for volume C: Failed!
Partition test for volume X: Failed!
Recommendations:
Partition test for drive C failed, critical system structure errors have been found.
Partition test for drive X failed, critical system structure errors have been found.
Is there a possibility without formating?
Is this a "physical" problem? Does the drive need to be replaced?

Any comments and suggestions are very much appreciated.

Thanks

Gion

432227 2006-02-19 17:45:00 to check if the harddrive is PHYSICALLy healthy goto www.seagate.com and download 'seatools' then run it drcspy (146)
432228 2006-02-19 17:57:00 Do as drcspy says. But its most likely just needs a chkdsk run on it. pctek (84)
432229 2006-02-19 21:15:00 pctek , drcspy
Thanks

Done all that; that means I was able to run it ones and from then on it(the seatools floppy) had one or the other files missing(error) and I was not able to run it again(3-4 tries with newly created foppies).
So at the end I was not sure if the floppy drive has a problem aswell?

So that leaves me out of any ideas??

432230 2006-02-19 21:44:00 get the seatools bootable cd image and run the program from that , (once you've created the cd you'll need to set the system in the bios to boot from cd as first boot device).....run the generic FULL test drcspy (146)
432231 2006-02-20 05:00:00 drcspy
thanks!
done the seatool test and when it comes to the file structure test it just freezes(better said it just spinns at high speed) and a cross shows up at the front of file structure test. Obviously something is mayorly wrong.
I will definitly backup all data now just in case.

Any Idea where from here??

P.S.
Something that worries me too is that the temp is rather high all the time -up to 53+ degrees C. So the fan ( which I changed with another one from the supplier of the mobo) is humming at a noisy level(a pain).
I wonder if all trouble come from there?

432232 2006-02-20 05:15:00 When making bootable floppies from downloaded images you must always format them first, using the "thorough" option, rejecting any disk which has any bad sectors . Image writing programmes don't pay any attention to the bad sector marks .

Have you tried a chkdsk? But it looks to be serious . :( Do a backup first .

Try a memory test as well . Faulty memory could cause disk problems .

Thanks

Done all that because I was anoyed of them not working properly. I may repeat the memtest once more.
I have contacted the supplier/retailer of the HDD and have not received an answer yet on what I could do or what they could help with ?

I am at a loss what I could do next?????????????

432234 2006-02-20 17:40:00 Hello again
There is no change in the errors yet, not even after running Spinrite6 for about eight hours to try fixing it.
Has anyone else had this problem?
Any help is very much appreciated.

Thanks
