431885 2006-02-18 20:58:00 Hi, I have a Sony VAIO With a Pioneer DVD ROM (DVD-117R). This was the original factory installed DVD drive. Whenever I try and open the drive, the computer freezes for a second, and it sounds like its jammed, and it doesn't open. It sounds like it's trying to open, but it doesn't, and then the computer unfreezes. Even if I go to my computer, right click on the drive, and click eject, it does the same thing. Yeah, I know what you're going to say. Straighten out a paperclip and manually eject the drive. Well, the geniouses at Sony decided that this feature wasn't important, and there isn't any manual eject hole to stick the paper clip in. I'm pretty sure it is a 2000 VAIO or some year like that. I'm not sure the model number of the computer. If it's important to fix my problem, just say so and I'll go behind the computer and check.
Thanks for your help. This has been bugging me for a long time now. :dogeye: If anyone could help me open it I would be very happy. Thanks!

431888 2006-02-18 23:45:00 It's unclear from your post if this is a Vaio desktop or Vaio laptop, but assuming a desktop, the most expedient method of repair would be a new drive.

DVD RW drives are very cheap for desktops.

But if it's a laptop, you have a new set of problems.

431889 2006-02-19 01:23:00 Could the drive be locked by software? I'm not sure how persistent that can be ... I had problems this morning with an external (USB) CDRW drive which wouldn't eject after a failed write. I had to unplug it and plug it in again to get the disk released .

Try booting in Safe Mode. That won't cost anything. :D

431890 2006-02-19 05:26:00 Yeah, its a desktop, not a laptop. Its not anything from software. I think it's just jammed. I've even fully restored the computer one time and it was still jammed. I'll try safe mode. shortywanabtall (9753)
431891 2006-02-19 05:44:00 nope, still didn't work after trying it in safe mode. do u know the price if i were to buy a new dvdrw? it doesnt need to be too fancy, just a basic compatible one with a sony vaio pc. not laptop. thanks! shortywanabtall (9753)
431892 2006-02-19 05:56:00 generally less than $100
e.g

LiteOn SOHW-1693S Dual Layer 16X just under $70
