431930 2007-05-15 00:36:00 I just bought an ACER Aspire 5101 (on sell out from DSE) AMD 64 CPU and had it upgraded to 1G ram for less than $1000. I have found the laptop to be good - but tech support from ACER to be lacking.

I also bought an external 2.5' enclosure and 120G (could have been a 160G) drive and Acronis True Image software for $200) Then cloned the drives then swapped and now have a 1G Ram/ 160G Harddrive for $1200, that would cost now $1500 from DSE. I also now have a 60G drive as backup.

You might want to consider similar options.

Cheers

431932 2007-05-15 04:42:00 Don't buy sony - they are great as long as they are working, but the moment they stop... you are up for big $$$.

Asus, Toshiba, Acer, Lenovo and HP are all good brands, I prefer toshiba and asus, they seem to be very stable and don't break easily.

Also most cheaper laptops don't have large HDDs installed, but go to any PC repair place, or place like that, and putting a new HDD in is easy. You could do it yourself. although could be a bit costly. Notebook HDDs are still aroung the $1.40 per GB mark, compared with $45c pre GB for a normak 5.25" HDD.

If you go down that path and really want one big HDD, find something on the net.. ascent (www.ascent.co.nz) is good, so is pricespy (www.pricespy.co.nz).

431933 2007-05-15 10:04:00 Nobody seems to have mentioned ThinkPads (en.wikipedia.org) - I have a 2nd hand T22 and it is very robust (and good for running Linux!) johnd (85)

5 Thikpads on the page I posted above, here again:

...although Groovvy says "spend around $2000 or less."

I'd almost go for a Sony Viao for its form factor over an IBM ThikPad. Much nicer to carry around.
