P4 3ghz 1gb ddr400 ram NVIDIA Geforce 6600std 256mb How ever I'm looking for somthing a little more portable preferably a laptop. I am looking for somthing up to par with my current system although it will be only used for simple garage 4 person LANS and wireless browsing round the house. I don't want to fork out near 4.5k for a good laptop and was wondering whether there was a cheaper alternative? As in building one on my own or constructing a very small boxed computer with fold down 15"lcd screen... Any help would be appreciated. Also my friend has a very basic laptop and is wanting to upgrade his ram. I opened it up and suggested this stuff dse.resultspage.com 6e5&site=&w=DDR333+pc2700+laptop+ram. However I am not sure what the difference between normal and generic is? |

| 432108 | 2006-02-20 19:02:00 | Your best bet might be a shuttle type computer case with a LCD screen. Haven't seen any fold down LCD's that are designed for standard PC's. Generic branded RAM, is just RAM from a unspecified manufacturer (or supplier). The manufacturer can vary between batches, and it tends to be of cheaper quality but still will work fine. |

| 432109 | 2006-02-20 20:21:00 | I was faced with this issue when the family laptop that lived in the living room on a small desk needed to go to the great spare parts bin in the sky, or get handed down to a less privileged but needy relative :rolleyes: After investigating a replacement laptop, I went with a Shuttle as noted by Jen. It was a waste of money to buy a laptop for this purpose (true at that time but laptop prices have since dropped so the economics may have changed). I was never going to travel with it so all I needed was a small footprint and the ability to move it easily if necessary. You can build them yourself from the barebones kit (you could get an idea of cost by checking out a site such as Ascent for indicative pricing of components). I use a wireless keyboard and mouse and they can be cleared away if the desk is to be used for anything else. | 432110 | 2006-02-21 01:50:00 | You may want to look at the Mini-ITX and Nano-ITX formats from Via. Almost no expansibility, but small and low powered. Fanless is also possible. www.via.com.tw |
