431867 2006-02-18 19:55:00 Its telling u the hdd/s are ready to die. Back up the files u want to keep, (documents etc). Programs can be reinstalled after you replace the hdd.

And then replace the hard drive/s.

431869 2006-02-18 20:43:00 Once you have your backup completed, do a thorough disk check (chkdsk) of the hard drive (this may take hours). If you know what brand your hard drive is, then the manufacturer should have a drive checking utility that can run either from a CD or floppy. This will give your drive a second opinion on the health of it. Depending upon the age of your drive, it may still be covered under warranty and if the utility finds any errors, it will report a code that can be used when making your warranty claim. Jen (38)
431870 2006-02-18 21:33:00 Thanks Jen .

I installed another hard drive . The existing one is out of warranty .
They are both the same harddrives .
Western Digital 80 Gig, 7200 .

I installed the new one as the slave and put the jumpers on the back so the
existing one is the Master

I was hoping to just copy everything , including the operating system XP
from the old one to the new one .

But I cannot figure out how to do this .
Any ideas?

431871 2006-02-18 21:56:00 Western Digital have a tool that will copy the contents of one hard drive to the other. You can find it here (support.wdc.com). Once copied, remove the old hard drive and adjust the new drive jumper settings accordingly. Jen (38)
431872 2006-02-18 23:56:00 Thank you Jen And Speedy !

I downloaded the Western digital file from the site you sent .

Then after READING CAREFULLY all the instructions I ran the program and copied all the files from the old hard drive that was going bad to the new
hard drive that I installed .

Then it shut down automatically so I could change the jumpers and I disconnected the old drive and replugged the cable so the new hard drive was the master drive .

Then restarted ! It appears to be working at this point .

THis is a successful repair thanks to the response from this site !!

431873 2006-02-19 02:47:00 ... Then after READING CAREFULLY all the instructions... What's this? Reading instructions? :groan: If this becomes a trend, civilisation as we know it will collapse. :waughh:
Well done, Freddie.
