433063 2006-02-23 00:16:00 Hi Team

DSE have been selling 10 packs of Fuji 8x DVD-R for $9 on and off for some time. This works out at 90c each (or 80c if you can claim the GST, and probably less if you have a Trade Card) and each one comes in a slim-line jewel case..

Compared to what I can find on PriceSpy, this looks like quite a good deal, the closest I could find on PS being around $49 ex GST for a 50 spindle (and no jewel cases).

It is reputable media and backed by DSE's warranty policies, so how does this deal cut it with those from alternative sources perhaps not shown on PS?

Cheers

433065 2006-02-23 11:08:00 I spend about $15 on 10 TDK DVD+R 16x disks, though these work well with my DVD Writer, that I'm happy with the max speeds they perform to.

It's not the cheapest, I know, but if there's any DVD blanks +/- that are 1x-16x (must be able to write at 1x, I find it's more reliable if they support the slower speed). Then I'll be all ears.

Also if anyone knows if those Fuji 8x DVDs can be forced to write at higher speeds than 8x, I'd listen to that too.

Cheers,

433067 2006-02-23 20:08:00 I just came back from a visit to the states. I bought a spool of 50 DVDs for US$9.99, about $15 new zealand dollars or 30 cents a piece. We're still getting screwed here :) If you know anyone going there, give them an empty suitcase and have them fill it up for the trip back! Glenn (98)
433068 2006-02-23 20:27:00 I bought the Imation pack for about the same price. They're pretty decent. Greg (193)
433069 2006-02-23 20:51:00 I have opted for DVD-R because of the format information I found Here. (www.digitalfaq.com) When I read that +R was not a recognised DVD format (hence the absence of the official DVD logo on the labelling) and that it had slightly better compatability, that was enough to tip the balance. I recall reading something somewhere about +R supporting multi-session while -R does not, but I'm not sure that I got that right.

Anyway, it sounds like the DSE deal is good, and the product reputable. There would have been screams of protest by now if it was crap.

As for the bulk-buy spindles from the US, as long as it is "known brand" media I think they are a good deal. However, I bought a spindle of 50 CD-R from the Office Depot there last year and although they write well (zero coasters), I have found a few with major flaws in the writing surface. I have since decided that anything important I have on them will be shifted to a known-brand. It is not worth compromising long-term data integrity for the sake of a few cents.

Perhaps if you factored in the price of sourcing the item (time) and the shipping charges (in this case a plane ticket) it wouldn't look like we are getting ripped off at all.

Tongue firmly in cheek Metla?

It works out cost effective for me, somebody else pays for my plane tickets, expenses and time . :D

Probably costs me more to drive to DSE . :p
