2006-02-22 21:54:00 | I have an NVIDIA GeForce 6600GT, 256 MB GDDR3, and have recently come into an ATi X800GTO, 256MB GDDR3. Which is faster?! Ran 3DMark06 (basic) and the test results: 6600: 1672 X800: 1505 I used the Forceware and Catalyst drivers for the cards, not the manufacturer specific cards... The X800 is GeCube, the 6600 is...Powercolour I think. Was just about to chuck the X800 on Trademe, but my mate reckons the X800 should be the better card. 12 pixel pipelines vs 8, 4 vertex engines vs 3, 128-bit memory bus vs 256... I'll double check these stats when I'm home, but on paper the X800GTO looks better. Then again, my AMD 3700 is running at 2200 or so I think, and kicks Intels running at 3400 for e.g., so pound for pound NVIDIA might get more performance out of their pipelines etc. Tomshardware behcnmarks are inconclusive as I can't get the specific cards matched...but look like in general the X800 might be better? Will do some game framerate testing tonight. Cheers, Brendan

2006-02-22 22:20:00 | If you get the right X800 gto, it can be unlocked to an $800 card, or however much it costs. There will be an article on tomshardware or anandtech somewhere *found it: www.anandtech.com You can unlock 4 pipes on certain GTO's that make it equivilant to the X850 If you are not into overclocking, but want a really good card, the 6800GS is very nice. Playtech have an XFX 6800GS that comes factory overclocked, for a really good price. They also have XFX 6600GT's as well. I am assuming you have pci-e. (can't remember if you said or not) 6800 - www.playtech.co.nz 6600 - www.playtech.co.nz I dont think the XFX 6600GT is overclocked actually, but this one is (sparkle) www.playtech.co.nz Sorry that information is not directly related to your question, but it could be useful.

2006-02-22 22:42:00 | Tomshardware recently reviewed nVidia boards including overclocked versions. Seven of NVIDIA's Latest and Greatest Cards Tested www.tomshardware.com Don't Throw Out Your ATI Radeon X800 Yet www.tomshardware.com Not exactly what you ask for, but there's a "Silent Pipe" version of the GeForce 6600GT. Not good for over-clocking, but completely quiet.

2006-02-23 01:26:00 | Hello. Come on guys you all know this one, we give ATI stick over it all the time. Shader Model 3.0, only the Nvidia card supports this!. As 3dMarks 06 tests for this, the NV card comes out on top, even though the ATI card IS a quicker card. | SolMiester (139) | |

You may want to get with the times a wee bit, the current generation of ATI cards do support SM3.0, where the last generation and back do not. 3Dmark2006 is a poor test to compare these two cards, I have see a Nvidia 7800GTX get owned by it and my 6800Gt is running slide shows in certain tests. As for the question, the ATI X800GTO will kick the ass of the 6600GT in nearly all if not all games. The 6600Gt is not even in the same leauge. 3Dmark2006 is a poor test to compare these two cards |

2006-02-24 09:41:00 | errrrr, thats what I just said bud! I think he was asking why the GTO was slower in 3dmarks 06? I read your post several more times and you said....""Shader Model 3.0, only the Nvidia card supports this!." , which is no longer correct in any way. Not too sure how I could misread that line?, lol its there in black and white! The GTO of course does not support SM3.0(as you clearly know) as its last generation, however you clearly stated ONLY Nvidia does which is clearly wrong, sorry if correcting you hurts your pride.
