432737 2006-02-22 01:23:00 It concerns my lil bro's PC.

Today he came back from school and tried to start up his computer. The computer does its usual initial hum but then that's it. Just keeps on doing a low hum. No beeps, nothing. Not even the light on the CD and DVD drive flash or come on. The light and fan on the MB turns on so it's getting power but nothing on screen, no nothing. Just the Main Power Indicator on, Busy Light on. That's it!

Now, I used to fix computer problems via CD Drive like boot disks or what not, or see what is displayed on the Monitor. But none of those options is available.

It's a relative new PC, about one and a half years old.

Any tips or suggestions appreciated!

432738 2006-02-22 01:36:00 Under warranty, best bet!, if not, then you may need another psu to check!, if thats okay, the mobo is fried SolMiester (139)

It's a clone, as in non-brand . I just chose the parts . It's ASUS MB . ARGH!!! DAMN ASUS!

Besides MB and PSU, what are the other possibilities? I can easily check PSU cause I got a spare one, not sure how I can check the MB is fried though . . .

432740 2006-02-22 01:59:00 I'd agree with SolMiester. I'd say the power supply is the best bet. Motherboard / CPU is possible but less likely. kingdragonfly (309)
432741 2006-02-22 02:53:00 asus are generally very well regarded cause they produce quality parts.......i'd guess the cpu .....possibly overheated... drcspy (146)
432742 2006-02-22 02:57:00 I've had a few PC's in for repair recently that were doing the same thing as yours and they all turned out to be faulty mainboards.
Like already stated, try another PSU.
If that doesn't work, disconnect everything from the mainboard (IDE, SATA cables etc) and take out any addon cards except video card (Unless it has onboard video then use this to test). Also, if you have 2 or more RAM sticks leave just one in to test and then try the others one at a time as well.

432743 2006-02-22 04:08:00 Does the hard drive spin up?
Then PSU or RAM.
Unlikely to be the board and if it was then no worries as they have a 3 year warranty.

I don't think so. The hum is from the Fan of the MB.

432746 2006-03-04 02:28:00 Yeah it turned out to be a faulty motherboard...

Now I gotta get the shop to send it all the way back and wait.

Wait...

Thanks for the reply guys!
