432453 2006-02-20 16:49:00 Could any one advise me about my dvd rom player? I have never had a problem with it before for playing back audio or dvd disks now all of a sudden it will not play any thing back it comes up saying there is no disk in the drive when there is. I can hear it loading and the power lights are on and all seems to be working I uninstalled the device and then let windows reinstall on a reboot and I have the latest drivers. Could it be shot and I need a new one. Any help would be great! Pcrepairgal (9839)

432455 2006-02-22 10:00:00 To prove the DVD drive failure absolutely:
1. Ensure the BIOS has the CD/DVD boot option enabled
2. Set CD/DVD as the first boot device
3. Install a Knoppix CD or the Windows XP CD into the drive and boot the PC

If the CD can boot the the Knoppix OS or attempt to start the Windows XP installation then it may be a dirty optical lens or motor issue.
If the CD cannot boot the the Knoppix OS or attempt to start the Windows XP installation then the drive has died - replace it.
