432598 2006-03-01 10:04:00 I replaced the standard p4 fan with a nexus, put a variable resistor on it to adjust fan speed, got a fanless video card (dont play games), changed the chipset fan for a heatsink, hung the hard drive mounting box on rubber straps, nexus silent power supply, took the sides of my pc case off, disconnected the case fans. Silence, well just about inaudible & my case is on the benchtop about 600mm from my ears Phil B (648)
432599 2006-03-01 10:16:00 But.....what is the difference in temps. no point making your pc quiet if its going to cook itself. As part of the heatsink/fan exchange, I also pulled out the front case fan (as it was noisy as well). So with no front fan, and a SilenX 11 dBa fan sitting on an XP90 (AlCu) I have a 1 degree temp rise (to 37 degrees C idle). Am in the process of replacing the front fan with a silenX Myth (110)
432600 2006-03-01 10:29:00 tazz....was that cpu or case temp? case temp is more relevant, mind you you still need to compare any temps to room temp. tweak'e (69)
432601 2006-03-01 19:18:00 CPU temp

The case internal temps are probably a little higher now I don't have the airflow I had, but its only temporary (till I order a new fan for the intake)

432602 2006-03-02 04:39:00 ... as I could not see 3db meaning much of a difference.

A 3dB difference means one is twice as loud as the other. That's "just" noticeable. But at that noise level you can't really hear either (unless you stop breathing).

432603 2006-03-02 19:33:00 My case temps since installing one of these fans has been only a couple of degrees, critical part of the case is about 28 degrees - this being around the graphics card and CPU. But consistantly temps through out the case have only risen 2 degrees on average. I am not to concerned about this and given I used graphics intensive progams are not too concerned. shomenno (7767)

Regarding the hard drive noise:

Nexus makes "DiskTwin Disk Vibration Dampener". I've used it, and took the precaution of running a small grounding wire from the hard disk to the case.

Samsung's hard drives have a reputation for being quiet.

The ultimate way to reduce the hard disk noise is a water cooled hard disk enclosure, very expensive and not available in NZ/Oz yet

I got a nexus hard drive enclosure to quieten things down when I make up a media pc, but I thought an old mudflap cut into strips is worth a go & it works.

432606 2006-03-03 10:01:00 One of my harddrives is actually mounted on a bracket, which is velcro-ed to the base of my tower. Just a short term test/fix but it works ... doesnt move at all and makes no noise :) Myth (110)
