432945 2006-02-22 19:49:00 I'm buying a new motherboard (socket 478) - which chipset manufacturer should I go for? VIA, SIS, Intel, or other? My old board was an Intel, but the cheaper boards seem to be mostly VIA or SIS...

Mike.

432946 2006-02-22 20:08:00 well personally I'd buy an ASUS mobo .......they do tend to use sis chips as far as I recall but anyway asus is a very good board.......very reliable... drcspy (146)
432947 2006-02-22 20:23:00 Anything but SIS.

SIS chipset mobos lag a bit, even with a lot of ram. And there's a lag / delay opening programs on the hdd.

432948 2006-02-22 20:40:00 If its a 478 you're after then yeah I would recommend an Asus board, preferrably a i865PE based board. This chipset (Springdale I think it's called) is still widely supported and is one of the few that Intel updates regularly. It is rock solid and stable... I've had my Asus P4P800-SE for about 3 years now and I haven't had any problems with it. The board's a good overclocker (if you're so inclined) and is packed with features.

I would have to say my only gripe with it is that it only has 2 SATA connectors, but this can be easily remidied with an add-on card. I think the P4P800 E Deluxe (www.asus.com) has 4 SATA connectors but I'm not sure.

Hope that helps.

Cheers

PS: BTW SiS chipset based boards do suck... they always have and in my opinion always will.

432949 2006-02-22 21:54:00 hm.......ok well i'm using a P4 2.4 ghz on a asus P4S800...have had it for 2 & 1/2 years and it's very good, exceptionally stable and cant say I've noticed any 'lag' ...if there is it's surely in the thousandths of a second.....? drcspy (146)
432950 2006-02-22 23:43:00 I got to admit if it's a motherboard for an Intel CPU (socket 478), I always buy an Intel chipset. I consider the price difference of $10 to $15 as a cheap form of insurance on reliability.

Does it mean Sis or VIA is bad? No. Does it mean Intel chipset always perform the same or better than Sis or VIA? No.

However as a rule you'd expect the Intel chipset to run more reliably an Intel CPU.

432951 2006-02-23 01:15:00 hm . . . . . . . ok well i'm using a P4 2 . 4 ghz on a asus P4S800 . . . have had it for 2 & 1/2 years and it's very good, exceptionally stable and cant say I've noticed any 'lag' . . . if there is it's surely in the thousandths of a second . . . . . ?

You dont notice that much lag, its like a 3-5 maybe 10 sec delay .

Well, it is on the other PC here, which has a P4S8x-x mobo (which is SIS -based,) . It can also lag, just booting into Windows . Its not really noticeable, but it definitely lags enough, to annoy some people .

I tried replacing it with an Intel mobo, that worked fine, till I found out the onboard LAN on the Intel-based mobo, was screwed and so were the PCI slots on it lol . (the modem wouldnt stay connected for more than a minute) .

(Which the shop I got it from tried to deny, until I found out first (then they found out) you couldn't install the LAN drivers . And they couldnt install the drivers, when I took this other mobo to them, to prove the LAN was stuffed .

So, for now its back to the SIS-based mobo .

432952 2006-02-23 01:21:00 like a 3-5 maybe 10 sec delay

you're kidding right ? this puter opens things instantly........i work on many many different pc's and honestly there are VERY FEW that ive ever noticed which are faster.....

Err no, I'm not . The other one here is a 2 . 4 as well, with 1 GB .

After so long tho, things go back to normal (which doesnt usually take that long) . But it's still annoying! I would say its either the mobo drivers, for some SIS-based mobos, or the SIS-based mobos are just plain crappy .

Which is why they're cheaper than the Intel mobos .

432954 2006-02-23 05:07:00 There are a gabillion different SIS chipsets, some killer, some not so killer, some pretty crappy, The crappy ones usually have a short shelf life before any issues are corrected by a revision or the line is dropped for a new model.

Its a case of reading reviews and picking the better chipsets from the range, all manufacturers have a porker from time to time (apart from the Nforce range for AMD, they rock from go to whoa!!!)

SIS rarely come out with anything steller or cutting edge (if they do then its by accident), which just means there are usually better choices if your that way inclined...But on the whole they are (usually) good solid middle of the range boards, with no performance issues.

Via boards I would avoid, And any generic board using SIS chips is bound to be a stinker as well....
