433724 2006-02-25 09:21:00 Hi,
I have just spent a day setting up a new network, and wiring up the cat5 in the walls to jacks around that house, and all seems to be well, apart from the speed...which seems slower than 100mbps sometimes...all the computers say they are at 100mbps, but, is there another way to check?

Thanks
Daniel

433725 2006-02-25 09:52:00 Poor quality network cards
Poor quality network card drivers
Poor cabling :)
Poor quality network switches
Volumes of network broadcast traffic
Slow PCs (i.e. CPU usage is maxed out or slow hard drives)
Poor implemented network protocols
Phase of the Moon

..can all result in transfers below the 100mbps rated speed (it is possible to get pretty close though).

The best test to transfer say a 100 MB file between machines using FTP and see what you get (on the better spec'd machines). I have use a 100 mbps LAN at work and you never see about 5 times the performance of the old 10 mbps network (in theory it should be 10 times).

433726 2006-02-25 09:59:00 It only seems to be when im accessing one computer off the second switch...my server, which is really fast on my machine attached to the same switch...but the other computer plugged in at the wall cant get to it as fast...time to do some more testing...it could be the switch at my end...not the new one dwnz (5333)
433727 2006-02-25 10:07:00 Hmm...seems to be my switch thats making it go slow, if i by pass it, file transfers go real fast....if its there, they go slow... dwnz (5333)
