| 433696 | 2006-02-25 07:45:00 | contents of folders My Pictures and My Music have all disappeared I couldn't tell you exactly what was done prior to this happening as there are several people using the one computer, I know the software for an old creative soundcard was removed, including a search in the registry as I was having problems with some new music software I have recently installed........ anyway I would like to try to find these files again, so where would I start? I have not actually deleted them so where have they gone? |

| 433701 | 2006-02-25 11:00:00 | oh okay thanks Rob.....have downloaded Restoration...now how do I use it? can I use it straight from a jump drive or CD for instance as it says you don't need to install it???, ( 'scuse my ignorance) I don't have a floppy drive. trouble is i wouldn't have a clue what all the photos etc. were called except maybe the names of some of the folders they were in. Can it retrieve files by type? |

| 433702 | 2006-02-25 11:55:00 | Well that depends on what you are doing. If you slave the offending drive onto another computer you should be able to run the Restoration exe from the new operating system and then search for pics .jpg, .tiff, .bmp, music .mp3, .wav, .avi or any other extensions you may know that you had in your My Docs. You should also try looking for the lost folders first. I have only used this Restoration program twice and both times it found my "stupidly deleted in error files" but the file names where a bit altered ie for Clearhead doc it found Clearhea doc but the contents were intact. On the other hand if you are running the system just as you were then you stand the chance of overwriting the lost files everytime you do anything, in this case, not advised, you just run the Restoration exe from any folder you like preferably not in My Docs, desktop is probably best, and conduct the search. If you slave the drive with the lost files you may find the My Pics and My Music just by looking for them in Explorer, I'm not sure. |

Have you actually done a search (include hidden folders) as someone else using the machine may have moved them If you can remember the name of a file or folder it might locate everything else as well I'd try that before any recovery attempts were made |

| 433704 | 2006-02-25 20:17:00 | Yes I have tried looking for hidden folders and searching for them elsewhere. The my music and my pictures folders are there but they are now empty. they are the only things I know have disappeared... other documents are still there I don't understand how they could all just disappear, there were a couple of hundred photos and up to 50 music files of various kinds (not downloaded songs) |

Someone fiddling around with the User Profiles settings could cause that to happen, as could a corrupt User Profile. It is one reason that I listened to Godfather's advice years ago never to store any data in My Documents or any other default Windows location. It is also a good reason to practice regular backup habits. One last stab - have you checked the Recycle Bin? |
