| 433354 | 2006-02-24 03:40:00 | Im up for host renewal in a few months time, my present provider doesnt offer FPage Extensions. I create most of my pages in FP, until the Form handling saga this week - needed to edit cgi-bin folder, Ive not had any trouble uploading with Filezilla FTP. So, what advantages will I gain using a supplier that supports Frontpage. Thanks.............John in Mosgiel. |

I guess you could say that is the advantage of having a host that supports FP extensions, but the disadvantage is that you are using FrontPage which is one of the most hated web design applications out there. :p My recommendation would be to get a proper web design application, such as Adobe GoLive or Dreamweaver, and visit HotScripts (http://www.hotscripts.com) to find scripts that do what you require. In saying that though, if your host doesn't offer FP extensions, whether you like the FP or not, you have to wonder what else they don't provide because they are a pretty standard feature. :) |

Works on Linux and the Mac as well as Windows. Only had a quick look at it but seems pretty good. |

| 433359 | 2006-02-25 05:16:00 | Hi, John. I don't want to insult anybody else, but don't you hate when you ask a question and it then becomes about the application you're using instead of the question? I currently have several (one huge) websites using FrontPage. It is the nature of my business to do so; I don't consider that I have a choice when I support clients who use it. And I don't feel that there's anything wrong with using it. I came from a Word background, so it works well for me. Others may be from programming or other backgrounds. I love when someone says "use Notepad to create your HTML". I don't have that kind of brain. Anyway, the big deal here is how much you need and how much you want to spend. I do web hosting as a convenience to my clients and often host sites for my friends. I am very happy with my hosting. I use www.endreamhost.com. If they did not exist, I would use www.lunarpages.com. There are other, much cheaper hosting services, I'm sure, but I've been around. I hate GoDaddy because you have to go through their site to access your control panel, it seems, and I like cPanel tremendously. They also charge you for software that my hosting (and many others) give you free, like blog, chat, forum, and CMS software (look for Fantastico to be included). I tried the eBay deals, but they mostly suck--they're down (page not found) too much; tho that IS where I found endreamhost on my third attempt. Endreamhost had been looking a little scary in the beginning, but it's been a good year now, and I'm extremely happy. Make sure you check out the hosting ratings sites. In Google, search "best web hosting". I got a bunch of hits for just those kinds of sites. Of course, people could be paid to put good ratings, but you can see how long someone's been in business by going to www.networksolutions.com and typing in the domain name. (I just saw HostExcellence on one of those ratings sites as the 2nd one. I hate their control panel, too.) Good luck!! |
