433786 2006-02-26 18:28:00 I'm not sure we really needed such intimate detail on a family forum  but since you have mentioned it, and if you don't mind my asking, did you ever get normal use out of it again after he used it to kill the HDD?

Cheers

The magnet - not his....which is of decent size.
And no it was stuffed. But it wasn't one I cared about, it was an old one pulled out of another PC.

433788 2006-02-26 21:39:00 I heard of someone buying a PC and taking it back several times for being faulty. It always worked properly at the shop. Finally they sent a tech around to their house and he found the PC covered in fridge magnets. Removed them and all was well. mikebartnz (21)
433789 2006-02-26 22:52:00 The field from a (flexible) fridge magnet is very strong at its surface, but is virtually unmeasurable at 2-3 centimetres away. I have just checked one (Meter: F.W. Bell 4048), and it measures 400 Gauss (40,000mG) at the surface but just 700mG at 3 cm. The more powerful metal "button" magnets measure 1100 gauss (110,000mG) at their face, but just 1000mG at 3cm.

Bearing in mind that the unavoidable static field from the earth is around 400 to 500mG depending on latitude, and that by the time the magnet fields get thorough the case and reach an HDD they will be roughly the same levels as that pervading static field, I think we are dealing with urban myths here.

There is no way that the field from a few fridge magnets will cause any problems with a PC, and I doubt that even covering the case with them would do anything more than commit the kitsch crime of the century.

433790 2006-02-26 23:58:00 URBAN LEGENDS? URBAN LEGENDS? Ya wants Urban Legends?...try this one...(hijacking this post big time!)

There are people here in the US who totally believe that placing cow magnets on their fuel lines in their cars will "polorize" the hydrocarbons and make them get better fuel mileage...hahahahahahahahaha...love it when they go to these extremes.

Magnets on the tower cannot cause any deperming of the drives....they might however cure baldness or bad breath.

433791 2006-02-27 02:49:00 You can buy magnetic insoles for your shoes. These are alleged to cure your psychosomatic hypochondria by activating various points on the soles of your feet. Perhaps sticking these to the case would prevent Micrososft BSODs, virus incidents, and spam. Graham L (2)
433792 2006-02-27 03:30:00 They make bed padding embedded with magnets locally in NZ, to improve sleep allegedly . Of course, some might say it works better if you sacrifice a chicken while facing east standing on your right foot beforehand .

Maybe a bad place to use your laptop, or not . A future "Myth Busters" episode?
