433428 2006-02-25 12:00:00 I shared / unshared the root folder just to make sure it could be done. Nothing else will share. I have the same problem on 2 XP SP2 Pro machines so it must be a setting in XP somewhere. allanl (1957)
433429 2006-02-25 19:54:00 Is file and printer sharing ticked under the LAN properties?

Are you sure both onboard LANS (if both are onboard), work?

He wouldn't be able to share the whole C drive if file sharing was turned off, and if it was turned off an attempt to share it would bring up notification that file sharing was off and would he like to run the network wizard or just enable file sharing and carry on

alanl,
Do you have any tweaking proggys installed on these machines, Have you actually run the Network Wizard? (as useless as it is)
Seems very strange that both machines have this problem
Have you disabled any services at all?

When you say the 'root folder' I'm assuming you mean your C Drive, correct?
If not, which folder is it that you are able to share?

433431 2006-02-26 01:30:00 I can share and unshare C drive. With C drive unshared, if I click on any other folder and select sharing and security, nothing happens.
I've run the network wizard, useless thing that it is, and set it to enable file sharing. No change.
On both machines, when I first installed XP ages ago, I set up a shared folders. So I know that sharing did once work. Only one machine still has a shared folder but guess what, I now can't unshare it (besides deleting the thing).
I can see both machines across the network. I can copy files to and from the shared folder.
I have removed all my tweaks. All services are running (as far as I can tell) and there were none in the past that were deliberately disabled or removed.
They are now standard machines as I've selectively deinstalled stuff to try and get this to work. eg the laptop is now running Office software, some programming IDE's and games. Apps running in the background are Norton firewall / antivirus, Brother network printer monitor, getright and Speedswitch (happy to do a HijackThis dump if anyone thinks it will help). I have previously disabled all of these and still no luck with sharing. Right click, share, nothing happens. Now starting to get really

433432 2006-02-26 01:32:00 Forgot to add, doesn't matter what folder I select under C drive none of them will share or unshare. allanl (1957)
433433 2006-02-26 02:40:00 Try creating another administrator account on one of the PC's
See what happens with file sharing then
If no good then you can delete the account again, or keep it, it's always good to have 2 administrator accounts on any PC, helps to have other access when things go pearshaped with an account.

Also, untick 'Simple File Sharing', reboot and see if that makes any difference

433434 2006-02-26 04:49:00 Thanks for the suggestion but sadly no go. I created a new admin account, unchecked simple sharing, rebooted and logged on under the new account. Same problem, could share C but no other folder.
Then I checked simple sharing and rebooted. Logged on under the new admin account. Same problem.
This was the same for both machines.

433435 2006-02-26 05:15:00 Start > run > sfc /scannow
Have the XP CD in the drive
Apart from that, a repair install on the least important machine, but I can't see how both machines could develop the same problem
It's gotta be something simple
You haven't attempted to set up a Domain on either or at some stage have you

433436 2006-02-26 06:37:00 Tried scannow and tried Repair on the pc. Still no sharing.
I haven't tried to set up a domain on either machine.
Short of a new install or bloody great sledgehammer.......... (might not fix the share but I'd sure as heck get some satisfaction out of it!)

433437 2006-02-26 06:56:00 The only other thing I can add is that when I click on the share option, either thru a right click or selecting share in the left panel when browsing My Computer. the Explorer window mode changes to background ie loses focus. So it is as if the share window has opened but nothing appears.
The same also happens if I click on Properties for any folder except C. Nothing happens except the the Explorer window loses focus.
All my other right click options work.
Anyone know if a command line can do it??
