433393 2006-02-24 22:35:00 When Compaq was Compaq, before HP takeover, and they were supplying network computers to corporates etc, then those machines were good. They were built to do a job reliably, and they were well built and rugged and quiet. Their monitors were also excellent, in fact I'm running 4 S700 circa 2000, and they are still in first class condition.

It's really since they entered the el-cheapo supermarket era that things have deteriorated.

433394 2006-02-24 22:41:00 Gotta agree with you abuot compaq moniters, although once they hit 10 years they start to hiss at max resolution (some worse than others). Mirddes (10)
433395 2006-02-24 22:58:00 sweet thanks guys anyway... I may have to just start anew with a better machine thanks, Matt Omega_matter (9861)
433396 2006-02-24 23:22:00 I've seen a lot of compaqs from the D510 series in various places, and almost all of them develop an annoying high pitched whine after 3 years. I'd imagine that probably means the fans need replaced. Greven (91)

I wouldn't limit that to Compaqs alone, if you can get 10yrs out of any monitor you're doing well.
They used to have an average 5-7yr lifespan from new with average usage (top end I'd say)
Although I still have 2 monochrome 14" on servers that must be damn near 20yrs old
Like Terry, I've got an S700 that I use on my test rig, I bought it brand new in 1996 and it's still working ok.
If my memory serves me right, I paid $1495 for it (ouch)

433398 2006-02-25 00:24:00 Compaq arent that bad, compared to the likes of HP and Dell, I have a compaq Evo D5S Small form factor right now, and have managed to turn it int a average gaming computer  my :2cents: any way
but yes, you will have to get a new mobo\computer to use your new agp gfx card - or if you are wiling to bite the bullet - go for a PCI-E based computer for future proofing purposes
