Or use ccleaner run it, and click on tools/startup. Highlight and delete the previous entries.

434242 2006-02-27 04:43:00 Have had nortons since i had my computer...so yeah...
am planning on more ram but no time or moeny at the moment...bugger!
but still want to ensure its not due to spyware or anything like that...

how do i remove items from startup?

Seen this so many times makes me want to cry, Nortons and Zone Alarm are my nightmare speed combo. Get Avast or AVG free antivirus, and loose Nortons. Get Sygate free edition firewall and get rid of that ZA hunk of junk. Also as others pointed out you need more ram, scan for spyware and DEFRAG DEFRAG DEFRAG, did I mention defrag?

434243 2006-02-27 04:47:00 lol, yer i replaced Nortons coz it decided to die . And use ZA . It'll do for now .

And to fix the ads/flash trash etc, I downloaded Absubtract . Works a treat . Kills all this with IE or Opera . (Even tho, I hardly use IE) .

AVG played up too many times when I used it, / rebooted .

It decided to play nice, when it felt like it . I killed it .

Xoftspy and Trojan remover are good enough for me, to remove the nasties, if I pick any up .

434244 2006-02-27 04:48:00 Perhaps Defender is the problem? Looks like it is for quite a few other folks:

lol dude Norton's, ZA, 256MB of ram is clearly the problem and probably high fragmentation. You don't need to look any further. It is not possible for even a fresh install to run well under these conditions.

434246 2006-02-27 05:12:00 While the asker may need more RAM, he still has too much crap running, and crap that takes up a lot of RAM. Even with 512, I wouldn't want tons of it being used by some background process... Dreamboat (9170)
434247 2006-02-27 05:16:00 i know i have too much crap running, but i'm not a expert so dont know whats nessercary to have and whats not, and have infact uninstalled defender, and removed those 2 start up items....so if ppl can tell me what other crap i dont require running then with instructions i'll prevent them from running... csinclair83 (200)
434248 2006-02-27 05:24:00 Sorry . Didn't mean to not be helpful . I look here:
. answersthatwork . com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist . htm" target="_blank">www . answersthatwork . com

Go through the list from your hijack log .
Look up the exe file names at the link above and see what it says about them . If they don't exist there, try a Google search for the file name, and you'll likely find something out about it .

To get rid of them without doing registry hacks, close all programs you can and hit Start-->Run and type msconfig and hit Enter . Go to the Startup tab . Start unchecking things you decide you don't want . Realize, too, that you can always add them back if you decide you wanted them . Some nasty things will put themselves back in there after you restart . Let us know if that happens and what those nasty things are, and we'll help you get rid of them . This is the first thing I do when I get a new computer . . . I delete AOL and uncheck a bunch of stuff in my Startup .

After you restart your PC, you'll get a message about a "special" startup . Just say "don't show me again" .

I hope this helps . :)

434249 2006-02-27 05:26:00 PS: I'm not much of a Windows geek, so I don't commonly answer questions like these, but our posts made me realize no one else was really telling you what to do either. Meaning no offense to them, of course. :) Dreamboat (9170)
434250 2006-02-27 05:31:00 i know i have too much crap running, but i'm not a expert so dont know whats nessercary to have and whats not,

Have a look in FAQs here at Pressf1. Theres' an excellent item about startups and a link to www.pacs-portal.co.uk which has a list you can go through.

Edit: checks the FAQs, that link ain't what it used to be. :D
