435074 2006-03-02 14:47:00 Well, initially my problem began when I found I was unable to restore to any bold point indicated in the restore function. I resigned myself to restoring back to it's original state, but apart from reading that it can be done, see no reference to it in the restore wizard. Now my cd rom is acting quircky. Although the status reads as ok, 99% of the time it is either unresponsive or spins a bit and then spits the cd back out at me. For the other 1% it works fine.
Now I feel I should fix this problem first before restoring.
I have unistalled and reinstalled the driver, set the preferences back to default and done a full system scan - no difference. Any ideas to try before I admit the laptop (Vaio A series, os. XP) into the local clinic for surgey.

435075 2006-03-03 01:31:00 Hi there Chatcliff, I'm afraid I need a bit more info. What are you restoring (Is this System Restore, or restoring from a backup, or from an OS Restore CD, or what)?

What staus is reading OK?

Why are you restoring whatever it is you're restoring?

Cheers,
Mike.

435076 2006-03-03 08:49:00 Yeah, sorry Mike , I have a Vaio VGN-A217M with Windows XP sp2 home edition. I have done a system restore successfuly before, but I did some udating from Vaio udate and afterwards my laptop was acting up (some programs just froze). As everything was fine before I updated, I thought I would do a system restore. I found I couldn't restore to any point. A coincidence?
My cd rom (Sony DVD RW DW-D56A) was still working fine at this point. Now it's not.
The status reads ok in system information and device manager.
As the drive isn't dead 100% I wondered if this may not be a physical problem with the hardware.
Thanks for your time Mike.

Chatcliff.I wonder if your update program disabled or deleted your system restore settings, which might be why you can't do a restore.

Have you tried reapplying the update? It may not have completed properly, and if this is the case, it may have been updating the drivers for your CD ROM which would explain why it doesn't work properly. Try re-running the update. Also have you tried just restarting the PC and seeing if that makes a difference?

435078 2006-03-03 09:07:00 Yes Mike, I have disabled, rebooted and then turned restore back on once and rebooted several times now. I'll do what you suggest re: updates.
Thanks.

435079 2006-03-03 09:58:00 Well Mike, your a little darling!!
Some of the update files were for upgrading Sonic stage and after reinstalling them, touch wood and everything crossed, the disk drive seems to cope with everything I have asked of it.
I have created a restore point now and will see in the near future if that too wants to play nicely.
Thanks again Mike,
Chatcliff
