434774 2006-03-01 07:02:00 Eldest boys laptop got a trojan dialer last night, which I promptly removed with AVG. Virus is gone now but it has left some footprints.....

When double clicking on desktop icons, get a prompt to select which program to open the icon with. Same happens to programs in start menu. The programs work if I navigate to their respective files in C:drive and start application from there.

So thought I would do a system restore to get things back to normal, but even system restore from All Programs>accessories>system tools>system restore dosent work. When I right click "My computer", then properties, I get an errror message as such...

Control Panel C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe Cannot find application.

Can anyone offer some assistance or guidance?

PS. His is a 6 mth old Toshiba M40.

434775 2006-03-01 07:22:00 backup your data first (recommended).

Start -> Run -> sfc /scannow

You will need your XP CD.. you may need to reinstall service packs and updates...
