434477 2006-03-02 03:33:00 I don't think Billy looks like a "flight attendant". He might not get exactly the same privileges. :D
Ah, but you haven't seen me since the operation Graham, the only thing I didn't need to change was my name, after all, it works for Billy Holiday. Of course they wanted to wax the moustache as well, and I thought they meant to stiffen it up....... ahooooahhhheeeeeeeeeooowwww!

Anyway, I think I'll unbend the gender now, I'm just not cut out to be a woman. :p

(umm...back on topic, I can't wait till I get to the US to buy a card, so I think I'll do a rummage through PriceSpy. I hope 3Com's wirelss cards are better than their ADSL modems though. Way back when, my first foray on Jjetstream used a 3Com USB/Ethernet jobbie and I gave up on it in the end, I just couldn't get it to download at anything more than a crawl. Sold it to a sucker...er...willing buyer. ;) )

434478 2006-03-17 03:54:00 Resurrecting the thread, 3-Com have discontinued the 3CRWE154G72 (according to their website) and the few that I can locate on PriceSpy are a bit too pricey, allowing that they are even in stock.

Any recommendations for an alternative make/model that will play nicely with a broad range of access points and has decent range? I'm hopeful of picking up the odd open link to complement any paid access I might use. :D

434479 2006-03-17 04:41:00 I have a spare, seldom used Belkin F5D7010, 802.11 /54 Mbs (54g) 32 bit cardbus PCMCIA card that is now surplus to requirements.

Offers welcome .....

434480 2006-03-17 05:20:00 Cardbus? Isn't that the one with the little row of bumps on top of the socket that won't let it fit into a standard PCMCIA slot? I only have type II & type III sockets (I've never even seen a type III).

434481 2006-03-17 08:46:00 Ah - you have the older steam driven model, so my card will not work for you.
I recall that thread some time ago. You have the 5v 16 bit bus. Mine will be 3.3v 32 bit.

434482 2006-03-18 00:04:00 WiFi is a standard. 3Com make nice cards. But you can go to Dick Smiths and get WIFi cards which cost less and work just as well. "All" cards work with Windows. [i]Some[/b] cards don't work with Linux when they come out. Graham L (2)
434483 2006-03-18 03:42:00 The WiFi may indeed be a standard.

But Billy_T's laptop has a 5v only PCMCIA interface, cards that are 3.3v only will not physically insert. Thats also a Standard ...

The new keying is referred to as the "low voltage key". A card with the new "low voltage key" will not physically insert into a socket with the "5 volt key."

Therefore, a new 3.3 volt card is protected from damage that might occur if it were inserted into a 5 volt socket."

434484 2006-03-18 04:49:00 Ah - you have the older steam driven model, so my card will not work for you.

It is not that old GF, it may be steam driven but it is the fuel-oil version, not coal, I don't have to pay a stoker anymore.

I see that DSE only do cardbus, not pcmcia, but they have a USB version at XH8344 for $58 that might do the job. Plugged into a USB extension lead I might even be able to wave it around for best signal.

Any comments?

434485 2006-03-18 04:56:00 What OS?

If 98SE it's anyones guess.
If 2K or XP, would be reasonably successful?
godfather (25)
434486 2006-03-18 05:15:00 Will be XP Pro on Portege 3490CT if I get it done in time, otherwise the existing install of W2K Pro
