| 435081 | 2006-03-02 19:12:00 | hi, In the past i have used a cross over cable and a utility called FX fastlynx to transfer data for back up - both running win 98 se now the desktop has gone to heaven - it is replaced by and win xp machine; 1.) is there a utility in xp that allows a cable connect with the win98 laptop using the cross over cable? ( to get my data to the desktops burner...;-() 2.) i tried the old method using the new fastlynx 3.3 - but halve way through transfering 3.3 via cable the laptop quoted a "stack overflow" and directed me to change this in config sys file - what is a stack overflow? cheers agator |

XP can deal with networking, if the PC has a LAN on it. Just connect it to the 98 SE PC, with the crossover (if u havent got a hub). Just configure the XP LAN under My network places, give it an ip address etc, if u want it to get on the net. |

| 435083 | 2006-03-03 00:58:00 | Slow down, Speedy. :D This is file transfer, not network device sharing. The files, after they are transferred, might go to a CD burner. It looks as if fastLynx is working, until it falls over. ;) The stack over flow means that something is getting too big, or too deep. The default stacks setting is 9 stacks ,each of 128 bytes, I think. There is a command used in c:\config.sys which tells the system how much memory to allow for stacks. Have a look at that file. If it hasn't got a STACK= line, add one, say STACKS=18,256. If there is one, change it. If that doesn't work, try changing it to STACKS=0,0. (This is all magic, so don't try to understand it ... see what works. ) |

I had to do it a couple of years ago, but I can't remember the exact procedure. | Greven (91) | ||

Also both PC's need to share the same network protocol. Though Microsoft no longer recommends using NetBEUI, strongly recommending TCP/IP instead, you can install NetBEUI. It has the advantage of being self-configuring. "How to install NetBEUI on Windows XP" "Microsoft has discontinued support for the NetBEUI network protocol in Windows XP. However, it is understandable that migration to another network protocol such as TCP/IP may involve significant time in planning and testing. ... you can find the NetBEUI protocol on the Windows XP CD-ROM in the Valueadd folder." support.microsoft.com |
