| 434848 | 2006-03-01 19:32:00 | Hi you can see my computer specs by going to the llink in my signature. wel i got my computer last year some where around nov-dec. ive heard that computer tends to get slower as days go buy. and i have started to notice that with my machine, maybe becuase i have installed a lot of programs, maybe not. wel if its the programs then can i solve this problem by installing programs on the other partition by making a directory. will that make difference?. or is there anythning i can do. i do all the basics. i run defrag, Crapcleaner to clean crap, antivirus, spybot. |

| 434849 | 2006-03-01 19:46:00 | Use some of the tools here (www.sysinternals.com) . I really hate hearing the phrase "my computer is slow" as it tells you nothing. I'm assuming you mean it is slow to launch programs, but really it could mean anything. |

| 434850 | 2006-03-01 21:24:00 | Installing programs doesn't cause any performance hit, unless they put themselves into system startup, In which case it makes no difference where they are installed. Fire up Spybot, select tools, startup, disable everything that isnt nesercary. |

| 434851 | 2006-03-01 21:44:00 | Jeez, A Pentium 3.2 with a Gig of DDR2 on an SATA drive with an 8Mb cache running slow, is it possible? How much room is there left on the Windows partition? When was the last time you defragged it? (if XP says it doesn't need to do it anyway) As the others have said, how much junk is there in the startup routine? Have you run CCleaners reg cleaner? Have you done a chkdsk? Have you run sfc /scannow for the possibility of corrupt windows files? |

Slows as in many programs take more time to load. such as word, MSN messanger, Cyberlink powerDVD. i defrag once a week, update antivirus, spybot,hijackthis everyday and scan my computer. |

| 434854 | 2006-03-02 19:26:00 | Well u can remove MSN from startup, run it manually . And if the entry for PowerDVD is this remotecontrol entry, delete it . Its not much use if u dont have a remote . If osa . exe is in startup remove it, same goes for fastfind . exe remove that too . What other programs / entries are in startup? Some are just resource hogs, and some can slow a system down . |

| 434855 | 2006-03-02 19:35:00 | Well then theres bloat: local user hive (NTUSER.DAT) It probably pays to rebuild it occasionally: 1. Open Regedit 2. Select HKEY_CURRENT_USER (entire root branch) 3. Export to file CU.reg (put somewhere safe) 4. Reboot to DOS. 5. Navigate 'Documents and Settings\ME' folder (or whatever your active profile name is) 6. Copy NTUSER.DAT to a safe place 7. Navigate 'Documents and Settings\Default User' folder 8. Copy NTUSER.DAT to 'Documents and Settings\ME' folder, overwriting old file (237 KB). 9. Reboot XP 10. Ignore the default desktop, and program errors or defaulted options. 11. Open Regedit 12. Import CR.reg (ignore the error message) 13. Reboot XP 14. Tidy up desktop icons (close the welcome to XP popup). That's all. Everything else should be OK. If anything is terribly wrong (shouldn't be), then you can always restore you original NTUSER.DAT in DOS again. You can also download the MS 'Hive Cleanup' utility service which does seem to help speed up logins (esp if you've been running XP for a while). Only make active when needed.
