434467 2006-02-28 04:32:00 At some point in the forseeable future I will be travelling to the US on business, and the last time I was there I was loaned a pcmcia wireless card which got me on line with minimum bother.

I will be staying in a hotel that will almost certainly provide free wireless access for guests, so what do I need to buy to take advantage of that service? It looks like $40-$100 will buy what I require, but is it a wireless network card or wireless access point I need, and are there likely to be local considerations to take into account?

This is all new territory for me.

434468 2006-02-28 05:14:00 An access point is what the hotel would provide. You just need the wireless network card. Free? Really? Just like the drinks in that fridge? Graham L (2)
434469 2006-02-28 05:35:00 The access will be free. The data will be just like the drinks in the fridge... godfather (25)
434470 2006-02-28 08:00:00 You just need a basic 802.11b or g card for your laptop. :) maccrazy (6741)
434471 2006-02-28 08:11:00 My friend said that when he was travelling through New York City he was welcomed with about 50 insecure wireless access points in any part. Maybe that could save you ;). DangerousDave (697)
434472 2006-02-28 21:01:00 Maccrazy is right. You just need a card for your laptop. Any computer shop or even Dick Smith could get you hooked up.

Though it's expensive, I'd recommend using 3Com, such as the 3CRWE154G72, wireless ethernet adapter, 54Mbps, 802.11b/g, PC Card. It's likely to place nice with others.

Many laptops already have wireless capabilities already built-in. Might want to ask your work for a new laptop.

Thanks KDF. I looked in the mirror and asked the boss, and he said no, I don't use it enough; then I asked the power behind the throne, but she said "you gotta be joking", so it's a wireless card or nothing I'm afraid. :(

I'll look at the recommended 3Com. As for insecure wireless access points.........:D

434474 2006-02-28 22:36:00 Check out the a,b,g range, if your traveling you would be best to cover all bases, although b,g should be fine. Rob99 (151)
434475 2006-03-01 03:39:00 From a friend of mine who is a flight attendent on a national US airline, she never has her own wireless card.....most all hotels loan one to the guests as there are varying formats from site to site...don't worry...they all seem to loan cards to guests all the time.... 434476 2006-03-02 02:06:00 I don't think Billy looks like a "flight attendant". He might not get exactly the same privileges. :D

3Com gear is good. There are other good manufacturers (or labellers). A card might be cheaper if bought in the US.
