435419 2006-03-04 06:17:00 Some years ago I built a web site using html coding (self taught). Now that the site has grown a bit, I'd like to automate it - but I don't know how or what books I should get to teach myself how to do it.
The site provides a venue for people to communicate about accomodation and business. It works fine using forms at the moment - but it's a real time consumer and a tie down. At present, the advertiser fills in a form and sends it to me and I upload their advert to the appropriate section - usually several times a day.
What system would be best for me to use so that advertisers can load up their own adverts? How can I stop people putting junk on the site if I swap to something automated? Does anyone know of any good books I can use to teach myself about this?

435420 2006-03-04 07:53:00 Use php and mysql.
www.php.net has great help.

www.sitepoint.com has good articles. They also have a php/mysql book, which I expect is excellent judging by the quality of the stuff on their site, but have never tried it.

Also, IRC is great.
There is a Chatzilla client on Firefox that is available as a plugin if you don't have any IRC yet.
/server irc.freenode.net
/join #php

Otherwise if you get stuck there are a few of us here that can help.

What kind of ads do you allow customers to put up? If they are text ads, a CMS with a classifieds module/extension/add-on would allow you to do this easily. Plone and Joomla have classified modules. Drupal does not, but you can modify the forum modules to use for classifieds.

All of them allow you to queue up contributed content for approval, and all(?) have captcha to prevent bots from posting spam content.

A basic Drupal (www.drupal.org) set-up is perfect for this type of thing. It is built on PHP, but for a basic, non-frills look you won't need to know any PHP (but good nonetheless). Another is Joomla. Plone is overkill.

Drupal is usually included in most basic hosting accounts.

My site is www.virtualrealty.co.nz if you'ld like to have a look at it. I'm just starting to read the PHP manual - phew - looks daunting - hope it's written with novices in mind :o)

435425 2006-03-05 04:05:00 Have a look at a list of CMSs (http://www.opensourcecms.com/)

It would be far easier to just customise templates, than do PHP programming...

435426 2006-03-05 06:39:00 If you want to learn a bit of PHP, Sitepoint's "Build Your Own Database Driven Website Using PHP & MySQL" (www.sitepoint.com) by Kevin Yank is good. :) maccrazy (6741)
