435276 2006-03-03 21:17:00 Hi- especially Finn and Godfather,
Recently I started a thread complaining at Norton's / Symantec, dictatorial attitude to a 4 hour update schedule etc.
You were all of a mind that it was not untypical in your experience.
Well, yesterday and again this morning behold, my settings, sic, every 5 minutes starting ,(daily) etc etc ---are STILL THERE !!!
:illogical
:)
This is exactly what I have been querying as the 4 hour timeframe required me to be online 4 consecutive hours- something I am not prepared to do, as it ties up phonelines let alone financing it !!!!
As Finn suggested, I had been updating manually every second day - now perhaps one of those updates has cured the problem- here's hoping

435277 2006-03-04 07:53:00 Hi Effie,
I have just re-set mine to every 5 minutes so we'll see what happens.

435278 2006-03-04 20:10:00 Hi Finn,
Yep, and it is still there as of my starting up this a ,m.
Somebody must have something waved at them- :angry
Please tell me when and if you also succeed as I was seriously considering trying another"auto update ability" antivirus. :horrified
I won't of course as I do have a long successful history with Mr Norton :dogeye:
That would of course be the last thing especially if this stays as set :D

435279 2006-03-05 07:37:00 Hi Effie,
I have just checked Scheduled tasks folder and it has reverted to 4 hourly!
Although yours is still at 5 minutes, are you now getting the notice in the bottom right of the screen telling you that your virus definitions have just been updated? I never get that now because, like you, I am not on line when the 4 hour schedule comes round. So it is still manual for me by the looks of it!

435280 2006-03-05 20:10:00 Hi Finn,
Well well, yes I checked as the "final start up" settled in- went to "scheduled tasks " and sure enough it is still set at every 5 minutes starting from --(4 days ago now)
This intrigues me as, now, as I back out of scheduled task- I do not touch anything that might reset anything--ie I click the cancel and nothing else on the window- that must just be superstition, so take no authourity from that- but ! I am still at 5 minutes ( I even checked again just now)
It may be fatuous but I assume you did go through "advanced" and reset the "minutes" specifically, there.
What also baffles me that the 5 minutes that now shows was set by me, long before, and each time I was reverted to 4 hours- that, as such, should not have happened, because of the subsequent reversion by Nortons to 4 hours---but it is there !!
:badpc:
Keep me informed - I was seriously thinking of walking from Nortons but was re considering untill you spoiled it ;)
Ha !!! I just went into Norton's and blow me down the "auto update" was set at off- how th ehell does that equate with th e5 minute sched., except that it suggests Norton's resets from that setting- looks like I wil have to get smarter- --will recheck later on today and let you know

435281 2006-03-06 07:42:00 Hi Effie,
I am following the mystery with interest. Yes, I did change the minutes in the Advanced section - but to no avail! I have now set the 4 hourly schedule to a time when I am often on-line. I'll see if I get the notification about the virus definitions that time tomorrow. This is a real cat and mouse game but I guess Norton's will be the winner!

435282 2006-03-06 22:54:00 Hi Finn,
I am still looking at every 5 minutes as before- I sure wish I knew why !!
I looked at chatting to you via direct e mail but I see you have blocked that - I have a hotmail a/c as well but my full name is part of it so am not sure if that is wise.
In case it was a red herring I manually checked Nortons for an update---none available, so though I have not seen the "5 min " one auto update pop up, it must have done so.
You state that you set the start to a time that would be when you are online- I assume hoping that will have the "initial 5 min update"- but as I see it, 4 hours constantly online will have to be gone through before the download.
but I do not think that will work- if it does tell me please :badpc:

435283 2006-03-07 06:48:00 Hi Finn,

IT IS STILL THERE and, and- it auto updated this morning during a mere 1/2 hour online when I checked my mail as I usually do 3 times a day--(chess moves mainly)
The Norton's pop up flag was as I had set it so long ago
and this of course before the 4 hour reversion we are talking about---i e it reset to "update every 5 mins" of it's own accord.
WHY? and what have I done that you have not? :waughh:
keep me informed - perhaps we can do benefit to our fellow cynics

435284 2006-03-07 07:13:00 Hi Effie,
My 4 hour schedule starts at 7.52pm, so tonight I was on-line at that time and the Antivirus definitions notice came up then.
I have Norton Internet Security on a 60 day trial and now have the problem of mail still being put into the Antispam folder even though I have turned off antispam in Outlook Express. Obviously Norton's does not want us to make any decisions for ourselves! Like you, I have always had Norton's but I don't know about this NIS because it has really slowed things down.

435285 2006-03-07 22:59:00 Hi Finn,
still working
You did say that late last night although set at 4 hours, Nortons did update after 5 minutes ???-if so will that happen in the future? it did NOT for me
By the sound of your last post you say Norton's is still blocking spam even when Outlook Express is switched off--remember they are operational independantly so by blocking one- would have no effect on the other.
Have you got the Norton's complete secruity system?- if so, I have not - only Norton's antivirus, for what that is worth. :angry
Xtra do what it said it would ---stop spam( an odd one gets by) but Mailwasher (used to download off my now unused Free.net a/c which gets a copy from xtra, before xtra stop any spam, there I get 60 to 80 a day and Mailwasher auto blocks and deletes these- a good program although now less necessary since xtra took on the job, but having paid the sub and there being no return monies I just ignore it, as I do with free.net.
Keep me up to date- surely between us we can get something worth while
