436272 2006-03-07 05:56:00 OK not the smartest thing I've done, but I installed the free download of BEARSHARE yesterday. First thing I did wrong was I installed the BEARSHARE program you pay for..so I uninstalled that before installing the free program. However since doing that my hard drive rattles and bangs every few minutes. I have run Spybot and Adware and AVG but nothing has turned up.Can anyone tell me whats happening and how I can fix it? Wendy123 (9776)
436273 2006-03-07 06:20:00 :) I ran Adware again and it picked up 21 things, so I've cleared those and all seems to fine at this stage *runs off to watch "shock treatment" * ;) Wendy123 (9776)
436274 2006-03-07 06:35:00 Reluctant to sound like a nutcase talking to myself  but the clanging is still with me. So any advice will be apreciated .Thx Wendy123 (9776)
436275 2006-03-07 06:51:00 I don't think installing that program would have anything to do with any new noise coming from your computer. How do you know it is coming specifically from your hard drive? Do you mean it is coming from inside your computer case instead? Have you knocked or moved your computer lately? If you take off the side of your case, you might be able to pinpoint down the location of the noise. Also check for any cables that might be touching the fans.

If it is coming from the hard drive itself, then start to backup immediately any important data as it normally signals a failing drive.

436276 2006-03-07 08:00:00 its either a dying drive....or bearshare or evil part of it is constantly accessing the drive eg seaching for new media to share. tweak'e (69)
436277 2006-03-07 08:07:00  Phew OK...I uninstalled bearshare and the clanging has gone. thx for your suggestions. Wendy123 (9776)
436278 2006-03-07 21:53:00 Sound like your problems solved, but disk clanging can be the signs of severe fragmentation of your hard drive, or as tweak mentions, an early sign of disk failure. kingdragonfly (309)

436280 2006-03-08 01:37:00 Fragmentation is easy to fix:

436281 2006-03-08 01:53:00 A badly fragmented disk can cause a lot of disk head activity. It should not cause "clanging".

I have only once heard a disk clanging ... it was caused by a bent RK05 disk platter which was hitting the head at each revolution. That was fixed by removing that disk and not using it again. :D

If there were no actual loud noises, just a lot of activity, and removing suspicious software has stopped it, I doubt if defragmenting will make much difference. If there was some loud noise from the disk drive, it's most likely a hardware disaster on the way, though once that sort of noise starts, it doesn't go away.
