| 436272 | 2006-03-07 05:56:00 | OK not the smartest thing I've done, but I installed the free download of BEARSHARE yesterday. First thing I did wrong was I installed the BEARSHARE program you pay for..so I uninstalled that before installing the free program. However since doing that my hard drive rattles and bangs every few minutes. I have run Spybot and Adware and AVG but nothing has turned up.Can anyone tell me whats happening and how I can fix it? | Wendy123 (9776) | ||

| 436275 | 2006-03-07 06:51:00 | I don't think installing that program would have anything to do with any new noise coming from your computer. How do you know it is coming specifically from your hard drive? Do you mean it is coming from inside your computer case instead? Have you knocked or moved your computer lately? If you take off the side of your case, you might be able to pinpoint down the location of the noise. Also check for any cables that might be touching the fans. If it is coming from the hard drive itself, then start to backup immediately any important data as it normally signals a failing drive. |

| 436281 | 2006-03-08 01:53:00 | A badly fragmented disk can cause a lot of disk head activity. It should not cause "clanging". I have only once heard a disk clanging ... it was caused by a bent RK05 disk platter which was hitting the head at each revolution. That was fixed by removing that disk and not using it again. :D If there were no actual loud noises, just a lot of activity, and removing suspicious software has stopped it, I doubt if defragmenting will make much difference. If there was some loud noise from the disk drive, it's most likely a hardware disaster on the way, though once that sort of noise starts, it doesn't go away. |
