436224 2006-03-07 02:35:00 Hi,
I would like to update my speed but am told my tower and motherboard are not able to be further upgraded--- I haveI have XP (2002 version)- but if it cannot be ghosted over, would have hours of updating to do,from a re install off the original CD,
I am told that XP Home is O K and that would do -at $165 being the cheapest I can find.
My frustration comes from, sic, playing three different types of chess at the same time, when say Postcardchess is being worked on, it comes to a complete halt while another version of chess is being uploaded- presumably because the 500 MHz Cpu is fully loaded up.
I want to obtain a tower only with say 2 gb Cpu,1 gb Ram, and anything above 20 gb harddrive, and then try and ghost over the 32 programs on my two harddrives now being used.
Of course after that upgrading would install CD burners etc- ie have a fully operational computer, as I have now,at say not over $500---because of financial reasons
I don't mind a second hand set up but nothing even in trade me etc can help me.
Question: is this possible say using Norton's Ghost to change to DDR ram etc?
Ideally to ghost everything across to the new hardrives without losing a thing, but onto much faster, later hardware, would be the ultimate.

436225 2006-03-07 03:25:00 Ghosting a PC is always a good idea, just from a recovery stand-point. However I wouldn't consider it as an alternate to doing a clean install on a new system.

Though you didn't ask, I'm guessing if your playing chess, and you're getting substantially pauses, it's probably more "CPU bound" than "RAM bound."

In other words, you probably have several bottlenecks, but the 500 MHz Cpu is probably giving you the most grief with something as CPU intensive as Chess.

436226 2006-03-07 03:37:00 not the best idea to ghost everything over . because of the massive hardware change windows will simply crap itself . sometimes its repairable but don't count on it .

it best just to do a fresh install .

436227 2006-03-07 04:04:00 Thank you Kingdragonfly & Tweake,
that is marginally better than I was told- in that theoretically it can be done but as you all say a fresh install would be essential.
Yes, that is why I want to get a faster CPU - it is just what I expected was causing the stoppage.Roll on Lotto
My increase in sdram - compliments of Elephant, made a freeze etc less common and it is sufficient - it is just as I had been dreaming -Oh well---- :dogeye:
