436160 2006-03-07 01:52:00 Can I get a Compaq Presario with 98SE to network on my LAN when the other puters are all XP-Pro?

I want to try this to get the whole update catalog for 98SE installed before I turn this dinosaur over to my grandkids....

I figger they can't hurt something that is ready for the grave anyway..and the hunt-n-peck they will do to it won't hurt anyone's feelings when it goes belly up.

They will want to use it on DSL later..and I have a spare NIC for it. I just want to get it all up and running for them before I let the 3 year old twins get it. ;)

.....don't know much about 98 so I am sorry to ask such silly questions.

I will be waiting for help right here for a while..........ZZZZZZZzzzzzzzz.......

436161 2006-03-07 01:58:00 98 SE will work on a LAN no prob at all .

Altho, its a lot easier configuring 98 SE as the main PC, not as a networked PC, with XP .

436162 2006-03-07 02:05:00 Aha! I see why you are called "Speedy" . . . I was waiting for only what seemed like a few minutes . . thanks . . . .

Hmmmmmmm . . . so you suggest that I use the 98 as the gateway? Is that the correct term?

Anyway . . . I don't think I want the 98 to be the master of anything as it's not gonna be here very long anyway . . it goes to the grandtwins next week when I visit for a couple of days . . .

I need hand holding here, as I am 'way outta my league with 98 and XP interfaces with each other . . is it too tough to try or just nasty to get right?

Can I use the Linksys CD-rom to make it all work or is that hoping too high?

XP LAN stuff is easy . . but the 98SE/ME stuff really leaves me bewildered .

Is there any site that has a step-by-step for idiots? :dogeye:

436163 2006-03-07 02:21:00 There's a lot of posts in here on how to network XP to 98 .

If I remember u haveta go into Network (under control panel) in 98 .

Select the TCP/IP name of NIC / then click on properties . And you have to specify an ip address, then fill in the DNS configuration and gateway tabs .

436164 2006-03-07 02:24:00 This seems a good site Joe:
www.windowsnetworking.com

Installing the IPX/SPX protocoll on both XP and 98SE computers can also help if there is any sign of hiccups with just TCP/IP.

436165 2006-03-07 03:16:00 Actually if there's any hiccups with TCP/IP, I prefer NetBEUI to IPX/SPX even though NetBEUI's no longer recommended by Microsoft .

Using NetBEUI alone rules out Internet sharing, but it is self-configuring and light-weight .

436166 2006-03-07 03:54:00 OK . . . I tried it and now I lost Explorer . . . and the system just freezes on the error message and I have to kill the power . . . gads!

Well . . . looks like another fdisk and reinstall . . . . again . . . . . . ! :badpc: :badpc: :badpc: :badpc: :badpc:

436167 2006-03-07 04:04:00 . practicallynetworked . com/ and http://www . windowsnetworking . com/" target="_blank">www . practicallynetworked . com/ and http: have all the info on it .

only problem with XP networking is having to have an account and set the name and password on the 98 pc the same as the account .

436168 2006-03-07 06:02:00 only problem with XP networking is having to have an account and set the name and password on the 98 pc the same as the account.

easy work round for that one is tweakui ( no pun intended tweak'e :D)for 98, setup tweakui to auto login 98 with an account that is also used on xp, Thats want I do, I have a Redhat 9, xp home, and 98 network and they all talk nicely to each other. SO Far

436169 2006-03-07 17:53:00 hi surferjoe. i think all you really wanted to do was have the 98 pc sharing the broadband connection, not files on the xp machines. is that correct? if so, all you should have to do is install the nic and plug the network cable in and you should be good to go, providing the network settings haven't been altered. enabling file and printer sharing is a bit more involved. good luck.
