436254 2006-03-07 05:09:00 hi am hoping someone can help me :)
i am trying to get home vids off a canon mv730i digital video cam. when i try to install the software that came with it i get the following error...
1608: Unable to create InstallDriver Instance, return code: -2147221164
i found a couple of pages on the net and checked settings..all fine
tried to update installshield but i couldnt fathom that out so gave up :)
then i tried just connecting the cam to the pc thinking that the found new hardware wizard would raise its head but nothing.
the cam doesnt show in device manager
i tried the add new hardware wizard... but canon isnt in the list so that didnt work either
i have a VIA ohci compliant IEEE 1394 host controller... which i think(?) is firewire? i have the cables that came with the cam... IFC 300PCU usb cable

i have tried all the ports on my pc (3 of them 2 at back and one at front which is attached to my 7 in 1 card reader and is sposed to be a usb2 port) but am not sure about the ones at the back.
i am running xp with sp2 with 520 ram and amd XP 2600+
any help and advice?
thanx

436256 2006-03-10 17:26:00 You need a firewire cable, not a USB 2 cable, by the sounds of it.

It looks like this cam does have firewire connections.

You need something like this (www.dse.co.nz)

Or this (www.dse.co.nz)

This is what the firewire port looks like (www.dse.co.nz)

The connection on this card, if you have firewire onboard.

Once you get the right cable, a mode switch on the cam, usually gets switched over to video or something, and XP should pick it up / detect it.

436258 2006-03-10 20:07:00 No you dont need a video capture card, with a DV cam.

A program like Nerovision, Windows Movie maker, or a program to capture / record the video/sound will do.

Once the DV cam is detected in XP, you'll be able to use it.
