2006-03-06 22:05:00 | Hi I have a problem that is bugging me, the print spooler in windows services keeps crashing, when it crashes the computer has nothing to do with printing (cant print, access network printers etc). i go into control panel services and restart the service but after a few seconds it crashes again, there's no error message is just decides not to work, it has happened on a couple of my other computers too, i've had to re-install windows to fix the problem. i've tried looking for fixes on the microsoft site and various others, nothing. oh btw - running windows xp pro with sp2 and all the updates. ANY help with this problem would be greatly appreciated! Thanks James

2006-03-06 23:53:00 | This has sometimes worked in the past so give it a go... Go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services and stop the Print Spooler. Turn off the printer. Now go to C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\PRINTERS and delete these files If found '00020.SHD' and '00020.SPL'. Now turn your printer back on and restart the service.

2006-03-07 01:13:00 | Thanks Pancake, i had a look in the C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\PRINTERS dir and there are no files in there "tried the obvious by revealing hidden files and so on" This is so fustrating :-(

2006-03-07 01:30:00 | Just in case its not a virus download HijackThis (www.cyberanswers.org). It will create a directory folder for you in C\Program files. Run a scan and save the log file. Post the whole log file here. Do not fix anything since most of them listed there are harmless (some are system required). This program will help determine what,if any, spyware/malware is on your computer. | Pancake (6359) | |

2006-03-08 00:03:00 | There was no malware in your log.It was clean.Did you format and reinstall XP.and then reinstall each program and driver one at a time to see which one was the culprit. | Pancake (6359) | |
2006-03-08 00:11:00 | Have a read of this article. support.microsoft.com Also when you rebuild your machine did you add your printer before or after you applied the security updates

2006-03-08 00:54:00 | It may be similar. I remember using NT registry fixes that worked on 2000. And 2000 is a lot closer to XP so it may help. | KiwiTT_NZ (233) | |
