436825 2006-03-09 01:20:00 One of my older PC's has WIN98Se as the OS and today it will not shut down when I try to close the PC down. It goes through the process but then re-boots as though I hand clicked the restart box.
Can anyone offer a fix please.

436826 2006-03-09 03:10:00 You can try the MS shutdown patch (www.microsoft.com)
but it could also be due to some file/program/driver corruption or other somewhere, so run the usual Win98 tools first of all, like ScanDisk, System File Checker, and do a disk clean up and defrag.

Also try disabling all programs in msconfig except system tray and explorer. If the problem disappears, then you will know it is due to one of those programs. Then you could add them back one at a time, until the problem re-surfaces, and you will have found the culprit (if any).

436827 2006-03-09 03:24:00 also try from a command prompt sfc \scannow ( you will need your install disks) beama (111)
436828 2006-03-09 04:03:00 Er, 'scannow' is not a Win98 switch, it's Win XP Either just run sfc from the run box, or go to Programs-Accessories-System Tools-System Information-Tools-System File Checker.

Whilst there, the registry checker can be run; also from booting into DOS, either by re-starting into DOS from windows, or from a boot disk, Scanreg can be run.

With this tool the registry can be 'fixed' or 'restored'.
From the command prompt scanreg /? will list the options

436829 2006-03-09 06:43:00 Mine does this sometimes - I just shut it down by holding in the on button for about 5 seconds. Peter H (220)
436830 2006-03-09 07:16:00 When my Win 98SE does this, I know it's time to run Adaware and Spybot (both on latest PC world disk). Someone on PF1 suggested this as a fix a couple of years ago after I'd tried everything I could think of short of a reload, and it worked - still does.
Good luck
